Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Drops Bombshell Health Update Before His 100th Birthday

Jimmy Carter’s grandson shared an update on the former U.S. President’s health as he approaches his 100th birthday. The reflections were shared during a music event celebrating Jimmy Carter.

On October 1, 2024, Jimmy Carter turned 100 years old. Before this milestone, his grandson, Jason Carter, gave an update about his grandfather’s health. Jimmy has been receiving hospice care in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

At the “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” birthday concert, Jason spoke with People magazine. He mentioned that although Jimmy can no longer do physical activities on his own, he remains emotionally aware and engaged.

Jason explained, “He’s been in hospice for over 19 months now and he’s physically weaker, but he is still laughing, loving, and experiencing the world as best as he can.”

Jason also pointed out that while Jimmy remains emotionally present, there hasn’t been much change in his health after several months in hospice care.

Before his interview with People, Jason also spoke to Southern Living about his grandfather’s condition. He revealed that Jimmy is not awake every day, and it’s hard for the family to know what state he will be in during their visits.

Jimmy Carter entered hospice care in February 2023 at the home he shared with his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, whom he was married to for 77 years. Sadly, Rosalynn passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.

Jason expressed how difficult it is to understand what his grandfather must be going through without Rosalynn by his side. He said, “After 77 years of marriage… none of us really understand what it’s like for him right now.”

Jason also shared that when Jimmy first entered hospice care, the family thought he might only have a few days left. However, he said, “God had other plans.”

Jason explained that Plains is the only place where Jimmy feels truly at peace. “It’s the place that has given him the greatest support,” he said, noting how important the town has been throughout Jimmy’s life.

Jason mentioned that while his grandfather might sometimes feel frustrated due to his physical limitations, he has also felt a great amount of love.

Jason’s recent updates on his grandfather came just before Jimmy’s centennial birthday celebration at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on September 17, 2024. The event featured performances from artists like Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, and Eric Church, and aimed to raise funds for the Carter Center, which helps people around the world.

Jason explained that music has always been an important part of Jimmy’s life. “Music has been a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather,” he said. “I can think of no better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than a night of music.”

Other events, like a military flyover, were also planned to celebrate Jimmy’s birthday. In a separate interview, Jason shared more about his grandfather’s life and legacy.

Jason emphasized that Jimmy’s faith has always guided his decisions, especially his choice to enter hospice care. He observed that Jimmy’s decision to stop medical treatments showed his acceptance of whatever God had planned for him.

Jason also spoke about the special bond he shares with Jimmy, recalling memories like fishing trips and learning to clean catfish. He also expressed gratitude that his children, aged 18 and 15, have been able to form lasting memories with their great-grandfather.
