Alexis Ohanian is defending his wife, Serena Williams, after she faced criticism for performing a crip walk during the Super Bowl halftime show. The dance, which has ties to gangs in Southern California, sparked a lot of reactions online.

When Kendrick Lamar performed at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the crowd was full of excitement. As the song’s beat hit a high point, the camera caught Serena Williams doing the crip walk, a dance she did with ease and confidence.

The crip walk was created in the 1970s by Robert “Sugar Bear” Jackson, a member of the Crips, a group of street gangs from Southern California. Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, was dancing to Lamar’s Grammy-winning song “Not Like Us,” a diss track aimed at rapper Drake.

Serena, who grew up in Compton like Lamar, had previously dated Drake before marrying Alexis Ohanian. By including Serena in his performance, Lamar took his feud with Drake to a new level. Serena’s crip walk made it clear where she stood in the conflict.

However, it wasn’t the feud that caused the most buzz; it was the dance itself.

Serena had previously faced backlash when she performed the crip walk at the 2012 London Olympics after winning at Wimbledon. Some people celebrated the move, while others found it disrespectful. A sports journalist, Bill Plaschke, tweeted that the dance showed how long Serena had been away from home and the violence connected to the dance. Fans were divided, with some saying it wasn’t disrespectful, while others found it inappropriate.

After the Super Bowl, Serena posted a clip on social media, joking about how she would’ve been fined if she’d done the crip walk at Wimbledon. Fans flooded the comments, praising her appearance and dance moves, with one person calling her a legend.

However, not everyone agreed. Some criticized Serena, pointing out that her older sister, Yetunde Price, was murdered by a member of the Crips. Yetunde was killed in a shooting in Compton in 2003. Some people felt that Serena shouldn’t perform the crip walk, given her family’s history.

Others went further, calling Serena embarrassing and suggesting that her husband, Alexis, should have stopped her from performing the dance. They criticized her for trying to stay relevant as her fame faded.

Alexis Ohanian, who co-founded Reddit, didn’t stand by and let the criticism slide. The day after the Super Bowl, he posted a message defending his wife. He reminded people that Serena had been criticized for doing the same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago. He wrote, “This is bigger than the music.”

In his tweet, Ohanian shared a screenshot of conservative sports commentator Jason Whitlock, who had also criticized Serena’s dance. Whitlock had said she should have apologized for the dance and compared it to telling an inappropriate joke in a church.

To emphasize his point, Ohanian also shared a clip from Samuel L. Jackson’s character in Kendrick Lamar’s performance, where he said, “Too loud! Too reckless! Too…ghetto.”

Fans quickly jumped to Ohanian’s support, commenting on how Serena keeps winning off the court as well as on it. One fan said, “Wimbledon should apologize to Serena.” Others praised her performance, calling it powerful and moving.
