Former New York Jets Star Nick Mangold Dies at 41 Weeks After Publicly Asking for a Kidney
The NFL community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nick Mangold, a beloved former New York Jets player who died on October 25 at just 41 years old.
According to a statement from the Jets organization, Mangold passed away from complications of kidney disease, just days after publicly reaching out to fans in search of a kidney donor.

“He Was the Heartbeat of Our Offensive Line”
In a touching tribute, Jets Chairman Woody Johnson described Mangold not only as a football legend but as the emotional cornerstone of the team.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Johnson said. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.”
Johnson added that Mangold’s presence off the field was just as impactful:
“Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family. He will never be forgotten.”
Mangold’s Courageous Health Battle
Just 10 days before his passing, Mangold had opened up to fans about his ongoing struggle with chronic kidney disease. In an emotional message shared by the Jets on October 14, he revealed that he had been undergoing dialysis while awaiting a transplant.
“This isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with my health,” he said. “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease.”
Mangold shared that his condition had worsened over the summer:
“After a rough few months, I’m now on dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.”
With no eligible family donors, Mangold made a heartfelt plea to the New York Jets fanbase, asking for help from anyone with type O blood willing to donate through Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
“I am deeply grateful to anyone who would consider donating,” he wrote. “Thank you to my amazing family, friends, and community for standing by me.”

A Legacy That Defined a Generation of Jets Football 🏈
Born in Centerville, Ohio, Mangold was selected 29th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft and quickly became one of the most respected centers in the league.
He played 171 games for the Jets across 11 seasons, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and recognition as one of the toughest and most consistent linemen of his era.
After retiring in 2016, Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022, cementing his place among the team’s all-time greats. Just last week, he was announced as one of 52 Modern-Era candidates being considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame — a fitting acknowledgment of his outstanding career.
Remembering the Man Behind the Helmet
Beyond the gridiron, Nick Mangold was known for his humor, humility, and generosity. He remained a loyal ambassador for the Jets organization and a devoted husband and father.
Woody Johnson shared a message on behalf of the entire Jets community:
“On behalf of the Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we extend our sincere condolences to Jenny, their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte — as well as to Nick’s extended family, friends, and everyone who loved him.”
“Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.” 💚
A Final Farewell
Mangold’s passing serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be — even for the strongest among us. His courage in facing illness, his openness with fans, and his dedication to family and football will continue to inspire generations to come.
