A young girl’s fate took a turn after facing rejection from her biological mother and 20 potential adoptive families.
Luca Trapanese’s journey to adopting baby Alba has captured widespread attention, notably because social services rarely grant custody to single, homosexual men. Despite this, an exception was made for Luca, and we’re delighted it happened.
The 41-year-old Italian, Luca, shared his story in a book detailing his path to becoming Alba’s father, a girl with Down syndrome.
During a radio interview, Trapanese highlighted the uniqueness of his case, breaking stereotypes about fatherhood, religion, and family.
In Italy, adoptions for homosexual and single parents have historically been challenging.
“I was told that I’d only be given a child with an illness, a severe disability, or with behavioral problems,” he told the BBC. “I was absolutely OK with that.”
In 2017, Luca adopted Alba when she was only 13 days old, having been rejected by 20 families due to her condition.
“She brought me happiness and a sense of fulfillment. I am proud to be her dad,” he expressed.
Luca, with a background in caring for people with special needs, had always aspired to become a father. His commitment to helping others began at 14, after losing his best friend to cancer. He volunteered for organizations associated with the Catholic church, assisting critically ill or disabled individuals.
Despite lacking a partner, he decided to pursue the adoption of Alba, who now thrives in a loving home with her father.
Alba, a determined child who occasionally displays stubbornness, enjoys playing, dancing, and the company of others.
“It was the first time I’d held a newborn baby. Before that moment, I had always been scared. But, when I first held Alba, I knew I was ready to be her dad,” he shared. “I was overcome with joy. I felt she was my daughter straight away.”
While it’s been a few years since Luca and Alba gained attention for their heartwarming relationship, their journey and daily life can still be followed on Luca’s Instagram, where he has over 320,000 followers.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Luca and Alba continue to enjoy their time together, embracing outdoor activities, trips around Italy, painting, meeting friends, and cherishing each other’s company.
We extend our best wishes to Luca and Alba, acknowledging Luca’s compassionate heart and the bright future he has paved for this little girl.
