As Maria nears the end, her carer reaches into his pocket, granting her one final wish, bringing peace in her final moments.

Aging and death are inevitable for all of us.

While I don’t fear death, I do fear getting old and losing my independence. The thought of not being able to care for myself, or even forgetting my loved ones’ names, is terrifying.

Maria was spending her last days in a care facility, fully aware that her time was limited. She had been a piano and singing teacher for years and deeply missed the music that had filled her life.

Fortunately, one of her former students, Joshua Woodard, was now working at the same care home in Austinburg, Ohio. Joshua had been her student since he was 9, and the bond between them had remained strong.

As Maria’s health declined, her greatest wish was to hear her favorite song, “How Great Thou Art,” one last time. Joshua, knowing how much it meant to her, was determined to fulfill her final request.

With the lyrics on his phone, he serenaded Maria with a heartfelt performance of the hymn, bringing a sense of peace and comfort in her final moments. The connection between them made the moment even more poignant.

“Hospice workers are angels, but this aide, Joshua, is truly special,” said Marti Adkins Redmond. “Maria taught him voice and piano when he was just a child, and now he was there to comfort her in her last days.”

Maria has since passed away, but this beautiful act of kindness remains a touching reminder of the compassion and dedication of hospice workers.
