A child died in a tragic accident at a haunted hayride in Tennessee over the weekend, authorities say.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announced the incident in a press release on Saturday. Deputies responded to Haunted Hilltop, a Halloween attraction in Harrison, Tennessee, around 10:45 p.m. on Friday night.

When officers arrived, they learned that a boy had been run over by a tractor while playing a prank on hayride visitors.

“Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a chaperone for a group of kids who were playing near the hayride tractor path. They were hiding behind bushes, trying to scare people on the hayride,” the HCSO explained.

Deputies were told that one of the kids tried to jump onto the trailer, but may have slipped and fallen under the wheels. He was found unresponsive.

The county’s medical examiner’s office told local media that the boy was 12 years old. In its press release, the sheriff’s office shared sympathy for the boy’s family.

“The HCSO family sends thoughts and sympathy to the family of the young victim, as well as those who witnessed this tragedy,” the statement read. “We ask the community to keep this family in their prayers during this difficult time.”

Since the incident involves minors, the sheriff’s office said no further information would be provided.

In a Facebook post, Haunted Hilltop said it would close the next day and asked for community prayers.

“Due to the tragic accident that happened tonight, we will NOT open tomorrow (Saturday),” the attraction wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the affected family. Please keep us all in your prayers.”

On Monday evening, Haunted Hilltop told Fox News Digital that it is temporarily closed.

“We are heartbroken and devastated for this family,” the company said. “We haven’t even thought about reopening yet. This was a horrific accident.”
