Every year, we seem to get closer to the futuristic worlds we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. Now, with the rise of artificial intelligence, a robot girlfriend powered by AI has become a reality.

The robot, named Aria, was introduced by a company called Realbotix during the tech event earlier this month. Aria is just one of the many robots being developed by the company, with a focus on different purposes. According to Forbes, Aria’s purpose is to “tackle the staggering loneliness epidemic.”

Realbotix offers different robot models at various price points. For instance, a robotic bust, which includes just the head and shoulders, costs $12,000. A mid-range option, designed to be portable and easily packed in a suitcase, is priced at $150,000.

Aria, the full-body model, costs $175,000. However, her movement is limited, as she operates on a circular base described as “a mannequin riding a Roomba vacuum cleaner.” Future advancements may focus on improving the mobility of these robots. Realbotix CEO Andrew Kiguel explained that their goal is to “create robots that are indistinguishable from humans.”

Kiguel acknowledged the challenge of making robots walk, which he believes companies like Tesla will solve. Instead, Realbotix has focused on lifelike facial expressions and appearances.

“We think we have the most realistic robots in the world when it comes to appearance,” Kiguel said. “In robotics, there are two big goals. One is walking, which we’ll leave to companies like Tesla. The other is facial expressions, and we’re working hard to create robots that show emotion and express feelings.”

Kiguel also emphasized that their robots are designed to be seen as romantic partners.

“We’re taking it to a level no one else is,” Kiguel explained. “Our robots can act as a boyfriend or girlfriend. They remember who you are. If you’ve seen the movie Her, we’re trying to create something similar.”

While Aria isn’t intended for sexual purposes, Kiguel stated that she can engage in “conversations of a more intimate nature.” Additionally, Aria’s face is swappable, so users can change her look if they want something different.

This development highlights an interesting direction for artificial intelligence and robotics. While it may not be as advanced as robots in sci-fi movies, it’s a big step forward—for better or worse.
