Super Bowl 2025 Star Faces Heartbreaking Battle Alongside His Wife—You Won’t Believe Their Story!
|Jon Batiste has a special surprise for fans at the upcoming Super Bowl opening ceremony. As he prepares an unforgettable performance, he continues to support his wife, who is facing cancer for the third time.
On February 9, 2025, Jon Batiste will sing the national anthem at Super Bowl LIX. While making his mark in the music world, he also stands by his wife, Suleika Jaouad, as she battles cancer again. Here’s a look at their love story.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Batiste’s wife shared on Instagram how they first met. In a post with photos of the couple, Jaouad revealed they met when she was 13, and he was a year older. They met at a place she finds funny—band camp.
Over the years, she has learned more about creativity from him than from any class or book. One fan commented on her post, “I didn’t know that! How cute!!”
Batiste fell in love with music early, starting with the drums at eight. By 12, he had switched to the piano and mastered it quickly. Today, he is a famous singer, composer, actor, and performer.

In 2011, Jaouad was diagnosed with cancer for the first time, and doctors gave her a 35% chance of survival. But she beat the odds. After falling in love with Batiste, they married in February 2022—shortly after she was diagnosed with leukemia for the second time.
The couple had been together for eight years before tying the knot in their new home. Their small wedding, attended only by close family, was a fresh start. Batiste described their home as a peaceful place that represents them both.
It took three years to renovate, choosing furniture and details carefully. Their wedding was a last-minute decision, making it even more special. Batiste explained, “We did it the day before her bone marrow transplant. It was a very deep moment in our lives.”
The couple realized they had a short window before her transplant and decided to get married. Jaouad, the author of the bestselling cancer memoir Between Two Kingdoms, said her diagnosis wasn’t the reason Batiste proposed. He had spent a year designing her engagement ring.
Batiste made it clear that her illness did not change his feelings—it only strengthened his commitment.
Laughing, Jaouad recalled, “We knew we wanted to get married since the first week we started dating. Jon brought it up back then! So, this wasn’t a rushed decision.”
A few months later, Batiste shared that his wife was doing better. “Every day we are praying. She is incredible,” he said, adding that if you saw her, you wouldn’t guess what she was going through.
The musician admired her strength, saying, “She turns the hardest challenges into something meaningful. With her, it’s special. How she’s doing—it’s a Suleika thing.”

In 2023, fans got to see more of Jaouad’s cancer journey in the Netflix documentary American Symphony. Her cancer returned at the same time Batiste debuted his original symphony of the same name.
One scene showed them playing Simon Says while walking through the hospital during her chemotherapy. In a voiceover, Batiste said, “I wish I could take the pain away, but I can’t. This is a test, and no one is to blame.”
Despite their hope, in late 2024, Jaouad shared heartbreaking news on Instagram with photos and videos. She explained that she has a tradition of reviewing her camera roll at the end of each year.
When she did it this time, she felt deep gratitude and broke down in tears. She revealed that her cancer had returned.
Reflecting on her journey, she wrote, “Hearing you have cancer for the third time can make you feel hopeless. But my photos reminded me that even in tough times, there were so many joys. Life isn’t just one thing—it’s both hard and beautiful.”
After posting, fans showed their love. One person wrote, “Wow, you are stunningly beautiful, inside and out.” Another added, “You are light personified 💛.” A third called her a “stunning and beautiful human! ❤️”
Even as the couple focuses on Jaouad’s health, they are also celebrating Batiste’s achievements, including his Super Bowl performance.

In January 2025, Batiste confirmed he would perform at Super Bowl LIX in his hometown of New Orleans. The event will be aired on Fox, and he wants to create a performance that people will remember.
He plans to finalize his arrangement a week before the show. But this isn’t his only big moment—he also opened the Jon Batiste Jazz Club at the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas.
The celebrations continued when Jaouad shared a joyful photo with her husband on February 3. She said life was good and celebrated their Grammy win for Best Music Film for American Symphony.
They also won Best Song Written for Visual Media for the same documentary. She wrote, “We couldn’t make it to the ceremony, but we’re sending love from our couch and thanking everyone who made this film possible.”
Fans flooded the comments with praise. One wrote, “The best love story I’ve ever seen ❤️.” Another said, “Y’all deserve all the awards … and health ❤️❤️.”
Seeing a new photo of them, one person said, “You look radiant. Best. Couple. Ever. ❤️”
Meanwhile, after watching a clip of Batiste talking about his Super Bowl performance, one fan wrote, “Wow nice!!! Can’t wait to see you perform!”
Another added, “CAN’T WAIT to hear it!! You’ll make us all proud, JB!! Should’ve had you for the halftime show!”
Someone else commented, “Oh, I wasn’t going to watch, but now I have to hear you sing!”
Here’s hoping that Jaouad recovers fully and her cancer never returns.
