The actor started as a musician in the entertainment world.

He began as a drummer for singer-songwriter Leon Russell. Later, he switched to acting and gained attention for his role as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story (1978).

He married his first wife, Judy Helkenberg, in 1968, and they had a son, Jake Busey. However, they divorced in 1990. He married actress Tiani Warden in 1996, but that marriage ended in 2001.

In 1988, a major accident changed his life forever. “I had a motorcycle crash without a helmet, split my skull, and had brain surgery. I even passed away for a bit and had a spiritual experience,” he said in an interview.

On the day of the accident, police and paramedics were nearby and quickly helped him. During surgery, he said he saw lights and heard a voice giving him a choice: stay or return to his body.

His recovery was hard and took time. His son Jake said, “At 17, I helped him relearn how to talk, walk, and eat. It was very tough for me.”

The actor said the accident changed his life and even his laugh, calling it part of his journey. When asked if he wished it hadn’t happened, he said, “No, it helped me grow and understand more.”

After the accident, he struggled briefly with addiction. He returned to drugs but had a wake-up call in 1990 after an overdose. He decided to quit, calling cocaine “a chase to the death.”

Later, he faced another health challenge: cancer. During filming in Hawaii, he had severe nosebleeds. Doctors found a cancerous polyp, which required a seven-hour surgery in 1997.

Radiation treatment helped, but it also changed his face, pulling his eye down and nose up. He said this affected his acting career, but a reconstructive surgery restored much of his appearance.

In 2012, he faced financial trouble and filed for bankruptcy, revealing he had over $500,000 in debt. This added to his earlier struggles and impacted his career.
