A company said no to a boy with Down syndrome who wanted to be a model for their clothes.
|Nowadays, ads are starting to show more about how our society really is. Some clothing brands are using older people as models, and some have stopped changing the way models look in pictures.
But, even though things are getting better, there’s still a lot of progress to make.
Just recently, a caring mom sent pictures of her son to a company that sells clothes for kids, Oshkosh B’Gosh. But, the people in charge didn’t want her son to be a model for them. Why? Because the boy has Down syndrome.
Even though we’re seeing some positive changes in ads, like featuring older models and not changing how models look in pictures, there’s still a lot more progress that needs to happen.
Not too long ago, a mom who really cares about her son sent his pictures to a company that sells clothes for kids, called Oshkosh B’Gosh. Sadly, the people in charge there didn’t want him to be a model for them. Why? Just because the boy has Down syndrome.
Meagan Nash and her family live in Georgia, a state in the United States.
Oshkosh B’Gosh, a company that makes clothes for kids, said they needed models. Meagan felt happy and sent pictures of her 15-month-old son, Asher. The little boy was just what the company was looking for – the right height, hair color, and eye color.
But after Meagan sent the pictures, she didn’t hear anything back from them.
Meagan got in touch with people from the company. They told her they didn’t want to use Asher in their upcoming campaign because they didn’t want a baby with special needs.
Meagan asked, “Did they say they were not choosing a baby with special needs?” according to The Independent.
Meagan felt really upset and annoyed. She knew not every child gets to be a model, but denying her son just because he has an extra chromosome seemed unfair.
She wished the company had thought about how much Asher could have added to their campaign. So, she decided to do something. Meagan posted pictures of Asher in a Facebook group called “Kids with Down’s syndrome.”
Photographer Crystal Barbee took some amazing pictures of the very charming Ashley. He was wearing a cool blue denim shirt and a bow tie, and people loved the photos right away.
Meagan, Asher’s mom, wrote a message to the company that said no to her son:
“Let’s make a difference – share so they see Asher! This handsome boy is ready to show the world what Changing the Face of Beauty is really about.”
As of now, Asher’s pictures have been liked more than 100,000 times on Facebook. Meagan mentioned they are working with the organization called Changing the Face of Beauty to try and get Oshkosh to use him in their ads. She also made it clear that it was an agency, not the clothing company, that said no to her son.
If you also believe that Asher is a very handsome boy who would be an awesome model for any kids’ clothing company, please share these images!
