Wayne’s publicist, Cynthia Snyder, confirmed his passing on November 29, 2024. He died at the Motion Picture and Television Home in Woodland Hills after battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Wayne’s wife, actress Lynn Herring Northrop, shared a touching statement about his death. “Wayne was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s six years ago. He took his last breath in the arms of his family,” she said. Lynn thanked the Motion Picture and Television Home for their care and spoke about Wayne’s humor, kindness, and dedication to his family. She called him the “best dad ever” to their two sons, Hank and Grady, and a devoted husband of 43 years.
Wayne is survived by his wife, sons Hank (and his wife Laura) and Grady, and his stepmother, Janet Northrop.
Born on April 12, 1947, in Sumner, Washington, Wayne Northrop became a beloved figure in Hollywood. His iconic role as Roman Brady in over 1,000 episodes of Days of Our Lives earned him widespread recognition. He later returned to the show as Dr. Alex North, proving his versatility. On Dynasty, he played Michael Culhane, a loyal and ambitious chauffeur, adding another memorable role to his career.
Wayne also appeared in other popular shows, including L.A. Law and Port Charles. In the latter, he played Rex Stanton, a manipulative and complex character that showcased his acting range.
Wayne met Lynn Herring in an acting class in Los Angeles, and the two married on May 9, 1981, in Louisiana. They built a loving family and shared a passion for the outdoors. In the late 1980s, they bought a cattle ranch in Raymond, California, where they enjoyed a simpler life. In 2008, they restored a historic home in Raymond, turning it into a museum and registering it as a historic site.
In a 1997 interview, Lynn spoke about their ranch life, saying, “Wayne is the rancher and business manager. It’s the best life for the kids—simple and surrounded by wonderful people.”
