The Man Who Revolutionized the Frozen Food Industry

After serving honorably in the U.S. military, Roberts entered the food business in the 1950s — and forever changed it. In 1956, he developed and popularized the frozen burrito, making it possible for families across America to enjoy quick, flavorful Mexican-style meals at home.

His innovation sparked a revolution in the frozen food industry, ultimately creating a billion-dollar market that continues to thrive nearly seven decades later.

A Legacy Beyond Business

While Roberts will always be remembered for his business ingenuity, his impact extended far beyond the frozen food aisle. He was also a renowned real estate developer and philanthropist, best known for restoring the historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, California — a project that transformed the landmark into a world-class luxury destination.

His charitable work touched numerous causes, including animal welfare, education, veteran support, and the arts. Roberts’ lifelong commitment to community and culture earned him deep respect across California and beyond.

A fun fact many fans may not know — Roberts’ stepchildren, Doug and Casey Reinhardt, both appeared on MTV’s hit reality show “The Hills.”
