Shelley posted on X (formerly Twitter) on January 9, saying, “I am deeply saddened to share that my beautiful son @Rorysykes died in the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m heartbroken… He will be missed by @shelleysykes, mama, his pet peacocks Edgee & Mickie, and all his fans around the world.”

Born on July 29, 1992, Rory was blind at birth and lived with cerebral palsy. Despite these challenges, he remained a symbol of strength and optimism.

Rory underwent many surgeries to gain sight and learn to walk. Shelley later wrote a book called “Callum’s Cure,” which told his story of overcoming struggles.

At just eight years old, Rory became a motivational speaker for famous life coach Tony Robbins. He lived in a high-tech cottage on their Malibu estate, which was destroyed in the fire.

Rory’s cottage was filled with the latest Apple gadgets, reflecting his love for technology and admiration for Apple CEO Tim Cook. Sadly, when the fire reached their home, Shelley couldn’t save him.

In an interview with 10 News First, Shelley said she tried to protect Rory when she saw ash falling on his cottage. She grabbed a hose to put out the fire but discovered the water supply had been cut off. “Even the firefighters didn’t have water all day,” she said.

When the fire got closer, Rory locked himself inside the cottage. Shelley explained that Rory told her, “Mum, just leave me, you go. I’m good.” Because of her broken arm, Shelley couldn’t lift or carry him. With no phone service, she drove through thick smoke to get help at a nearby fire station but was told they had no water. When firefighters reached the cottage, it was too late.

The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, promised a full investigation, saying, “When the fires are out, we will review what worked and what didn’t.”

Water expert Edith De Guzman explained that areas like Malibu have unique challenges in keeping water supplies running during emergencies because of the high elevation and the energy needed to pump water uphill.

When Shelley returned to the property, she described the devastation: “Everything, all three cottages that were fireproof and built to code, burned to the ground in an hour.” She found only black ash where their home once stood.

Authorities have not officially confirmed Rory’s death. His remains are believed to be in the rubble, but they have not been found. Shelley said Rory likely died from carbon monoxide poisoning, sparing him pain.

Rory inspired many with his kindness and determination. He and Shelley co-founded Happy Charity, which focused on spreading positivity and helping others. His charity work and TV appearances showed his passion for helping people despite his physical limits. Shelley said, “Rory always looked on the bright side of life, and I hope he is remembered that way.”

Rory was also a motivational speaker and loved technology and gaming, especially RuneScape. He traveled widely and made a positive impact wherever he went.

Shelley plans to rebuild their property in Rory’s memory. “I’m not moving. This will be a special place for Rory and me, even more beautiful than before,” she said.

The local and online communities have offered support and condolences, with many wanting to help Shelley rebuild her home.

As questions remain about the firefighting efforts and water supply during the wildfires, Shelley continues to honor Rory’s life and legacy. She told ABC News, “No life should be forgotten. His was definitely special.”

The Australian government has offered support to the Sykes family, with a spokesperson saying, “Our thoughts are with them.”

Shelley accused the local water district of cutting off the water supply, leaving her helpless during the fire. However, the water district denied this, stating that water service remained available throughout the area.

The wildfires in Los Angeles County have claimed 24 lives, destroyed thousands of homes, and left 16 people missing. Firefighters are still battling the fires, and strong winds may worsen the situation.

Rory will be remembered for his compassion, love for life, and efforts to help others. His IMDB bio described him as “a guy with cerebral palsy who plays too much RuneScape and loves building things on the web. Co-founded Happy Charity to help others.”

As Shelley grieves her loss, her strength shows the depth of a mother’s love. Rory’s story will continue to inspire people worldwide.
