One cold morning at the bus stop, I saw a little girl standing there, shivering. She had on a pair of sneakers, even though it was freezing outside. Her shoes looked worn out, and I noticed she kept shifting her feet, like she was trying to warm them up. It was clear she wasn’t dressed for the weather, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how cold she must have been.

As I watched her, I realized that I had seen her before. She went to the same school as my son. I didn’t know her name, but I remembered her face. Seeing her standing there in such thin shoes made me wonder what her home life was like. I felt a pang of concern for her, and the thought stayed with me even after I left the bus stop.

Later that day, I decided to call the school office. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, but I was curious about her situation. I asked about the little girl in sneakers, hoping to understand why she didn’t have warm shoes in the middle of winter.

The school staff told me that her family was going through a tough time. Money was tight, and they were struggling just to get by. Buying warm clothes and shoes wasn’t a top priority when they had to make sure there was enough food on the table. Hearing this broke my heart.

I couldn’t stop thinking about how difficult it must be for her and her family. No child should have to choose between being warm and having enough to eat. It made me realize how much some families struggle with things many of us take for granted.
