Inside Carrie Underwoods 400-Acre Farm Life and the Other Home She Left Behind
The singer of “Before He Cheats” has exchanged a villa complete with an extravagant dressing suite for a farm where even the chickens are stylish. A frightening incident one night made the decision to leave the luxurious lifestyle much easier.
Carrie Underwood and her husband Mike Fisher created their family life around two impressive homes in Tennessee, enjoying both a sophisticated villa in Brentwood and a vast 400-acre estate in Franklin.
Before embracing moments with bottle-fed lambs and homegrown meals, a routine outing resulted in surgery that left Carrie uncertain about her facial recovery. This incident was preceded by growing concerns over security related to their neighborhood.
The Glamorous Brentwood Villa
Before Carrie’s passion for massive vegetables took hold, she owned a home that embodied the glamor expected of a country music star. In 2007, she acquired the Italian-style villa in Brentwood, Tennessee, well ahead of her 2010 wedding to Mike, and the property certainly seemed poised for its celebrity owner.
As noted by Architectural Digest, she purchased the residence for $1.352 million, situated within a gated golf community. Constructed in 2000, the three-story house boasted 7,083 square feet, featuring four bedrooms and six bathrooms, all with views of the rolling hills near a private course.
Upon entering, the foyer provided a grand introduction, featuring a soaring double-height ceiling, an ornate crystal chandelier, and a gracefully curved staircase with wooden steps and ornamental ironwork. Just a few steps below the entrance sat the formal dining room, which featured French windows overlooking the front yard.
The expansive main living area was equally impressive, adorned with towering windows framed in deep navy drapes and a beautifully carved marble fireplace that certainly commanded attention. Arched niches and warm finishes enhanced the space’s drama, creating a comfortable atmosphere.
The kitchen featured a sizable central island with raised bar seating, surrounded by wooden cabinets and dark countertops. Realtor.com highlighted the presence of stainless-steel appliances, including a wine fridge, while a cozy breakfast nook and an adjoining family room allowed for laid-back dining.
The family room also included another fireplace, built-in storage, and access to the outdoor patio. The villa boasted a game room, while its finished basement was equipped with a den, gym, and wet bar, with heated marble flooring providing an extra touch of luxury.
The Impressive Dressing Suite
For those enchanted by the downstairs spaces, the primary suite presented a compelling reason to delve deeper. The bedroom was complemented by a gas fireplace and large windows, while the en-suite bathroom featured a deep Jacuzzi-style soaking tub and two nearby vanities.
A highlight of the suite was the spectacular dressing area. A spiral staircase connected the primary closet to an expansive dressing room located on the floor below, providing a level of attention to clothing and accessories that many can only dream of.
Illuminated cream display shelves enveloped a pink tufted seating area, with mirrors reflecting light throughout the space. A rolling wooden library ladder completed the luxurious aesthetic, as a serious shoe collection clearly warranted such careful organization.
Marble flooring and dedicated displays provided a lovely backdrop for handbags and footwear. Beyond mere storage, a Hollywood-style illuminated vanity and separate lounge area offered a perfect spot to prepare, with crystal chandeliers adding a glamorous touch.
The outdoor areas were equally appealing, featuring tiered stone terraces, decorative iron railings, and a circular fire pit. On the covered porch, rocking chairs beneath a ceiling fan overlooked the golf course and lush surroundings.
Despite the grandeur of their home, Carrie and Mike’s social media showcased the warmth of their everyday life. Cozy sofas surrounded the fireplaces, pets sprawled across cushions, and family rooms were filled with the joys of life with a young child, revealing a sweetness that no chandelier could replicate.
The Night That Changed Everything
That familiar home became the backdrop for a terrifying incident on November 10, 2017, when Carrie took her dogs outside. She fell and broke her wrist, suffering facial injuries severe enough to necessitate 40 to 50 stitches.
In an interview with Hoda Kotb on “Today,” she recounted, “I just fell. I just tripped taking my dogs out to do their business. It could happen to anybody.”
Carrie added, “There was one little step that I went to catch myself on, and I missed.”
Her wrist required surgery, preventing her from participating in the Country Rising benefit concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Although news of her broken wrist was publicized, she took time before revealing the extent of her facial injuries.
In a message to her fan club that was shared by People, she expressed, “It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life.” Seven weeks into her recovery, she still faced uncertainty regarding her appearance.
As she looked forward to 2018, she prepared fans for her eventual return to the spotlight. “And when I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different.”
During a Mother’s Day event in New York City for CALIA by Carrie Underwood that spring, she reassured everyone, “I feel great.” However, recovery was just one of the many challenges the couple faced at their residence.
A source told People that security concerns also played a role in their desire to move. “They are completely done with the neighborhood. The decision came after her fall,” the insider noted in 2018.
“They’ve been having a lot of issues with neighbors letting people into the community to look around, and it all escalated after the fall,” added the source.
By October 2018, a photo of a moving truck posted by Mike hinted at the family’s departure. The villa was listed for sale in 2019 with an asking price of $1.45 million, while a significantly larger piece of land in Tennessee provided a more private place for a fresh start.
Their Franklin Dream Had Long Been in the Works
The farm had been a project in the making, with land acquisitions dating back to 2011, rather than a hasty decision made after the accident. Carrie and Mike bought the property in two separate transactions totaling $3.2 million.
Spanning 400 acres in Franklin, they constructed a custom home featuring multiple barns and private horse facilities. A lake, chicken coop, and vegetable gardens made this location rich with activities beyond just an impressive driveway.
Even during the home’s design process, Carrie was clear about her essential comforts. In 2016, she revealed to Country Living, “My must-haves are a wood-burning fireplace, a porch swing, and rocking chairs.”
The land seemed perfectly suited to her desires, with black rail fencing outlining green pastures beneath the open sky. A rustic barn with a classic red metal roof and a cupola, along with an American flag and a charming wooden outbuilding, rounded out the picturesque setting.
Inside, tall grid windows allowed natural light to flood the rooms, illuminating pale wide-plank flooring and soft, neutral furnishings. Iron stair rails added definition to the open spaces, creating an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere that highlighted the joys of staying at home.
The main house contained multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, in addition to living areas and a basement. Carrie maintained a walk-in closet featuring floor-to-ceiling storage for her clothing and accessories, proving that enjoying farm life didn’t mean giving up on style.
Their family moments shared on social media also revealed the inviting nature of their interiors: children dancing in the living room, birthday celebrations, and dogs lounging in sweaters. These spaces were filled with the everyday joy Carrie was eager to protect.
The Farm’s Adorable Residents
Beyond the home, fresh bedding and bright pine-lined stalls created a cozy environment for newborn lambs. Carrie lovingly cradled and bottle-fed the little ones, while inquisitive donkeys peeked over fences, clearly ready to interrupt her plans.
Chickens enjoyed their sunny yards, and some even donned tiny bow ties, serving as a delightful reminder that the family maintained their sense of fun amidst their busy schedules.
Their diverse animal household included cows, horses, sheep, ducks, and various poultry. Carrie, 43, and Mike, 46, managed the farm alongside their sons, Isaiah, 11, and Jacob, 7.
Caring for their pets involved genuine work and required extra help when the family was away. After a Disney-themed episode of “American Idol” in April 2026, Carrie explained that a farm manager assisted with the sheep and horses during her absences.
“We do as much as we can, but I’m obviously not there all the time, and neither is my husband, so we do have help,” she shared. She also believed that if she dedicated enough time, the property could meet most of their needs.
“I think if I had to, I could be self-sustained at home. I love growing things.”
Carrie’s Impressive Greenhouse
Following their move to the farm, Carrie and Mike began developing the garden, making significant strides during the 2020 pandemic. By 2023, Carrie was collaborating with Epic Gardening on a greenhouse, elevating her enthusiasm for homegrown produce.
As reported in 2024, the greenhouse measures 16 by 28 feet and enables her to cultivate crops year-round. Inside, L-shaped, rectangular, and round beds filled the space, complemented by more raised beds outdoors and a potting bench on the sunny side amidst citrus trees.
Herbs and vegetable beds supported a variety of crops, including arugula and chives. She also grew carrots, beets, radishes, and tomatoes, along with wild strawberries, zucchini, squash blossoms, mushrooms, and watermelons.
The orchard produced apples and peaches, while blueberry and blackberry bushes contributed to their harvest. The chickens laid fresh eggs, making the journey back to the kitchen a remarkably productive one.
In 2024, she joyfully celebrated her first mandarins, exclaiming, “Ahhhhh!!!! Picked my first mandarins today! I’m so excited!!!!” She also showcased limes grown in her greenhouse.
With an estimated fortune of $120 million that year, her delight over the homegrown citrus was especially endearing. It seems that even a bountiful harvest can match the joys of being a superstar.
Her success with Italian heirloom tromboncino squash was another significant gardening achievement after she planted seeds in the summer of 2025. She humorously admitted, “I’m a lazy gardener, and I just throw seeds in the ground and hope for the best.”
Only one seed sprouted, but it proved to be useful: come November, she showcased five massive squash, some of which were nearly as tall as she was. “We’ll be eating these all winter!” she proudly declared.
Brightly colored beets and enormous carrots added to her garden’s beautiful rewards, while charming pergolas and white picket accents enhanced the growing areas. Inside, wooden tables displayed jars and sage-green pantry shelves that housed the results of her canning activities.
Carrie made applesauce and preserved various produce, with crocheting being another of her hobbies. During a 2023 appearance on “The Dr. Josh Axe Show,” she shared, “We eat what we have. We eat seasonally. It all tastes delicious because it’s food.”
Amidst the gratifying harvests, she cherished the experience of nurturing something from the ground up. As she expressed to Epic Gardening, “It feels like little miracles every time I get something.”
Cinderella’s Ball Transitions to Daily Chores
With so much happening at home, transitioning back to television glamor could not have been more contrasting. When Us Weekly spoke with Carrie on April 27, 2026, during a taping of “American Idol” for its Taylor Swift night, she drew a fairy-tale comparison.
“When I’m away [for work], I’m like Cinderella at the ball,” she said. “I’m a princess, and it’s great.”
However, returning home was far less glamorous. “And then I come home, and I’m covered in dirt [and] poop. It’s just the polar opposite,” she noted.
“I’m cleaning up after everybody and barefoot in the kitchen,” Carrie mentioned. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Her orchard served as a peaceful spot for reflection, though one visit in 2025 saw her unexpectedly encounter a rat snake in a blueberry bush. She recounted her surprise shortly after beginning her prayer, contemplating faith and how troubles can arise even when she feels close to God.
After finishing her prayer, she continued her morning, leaving the snake undisturbed. Even a serene blueberry patch could present occasional surprises.
Her Sons Gave Mom an Ordinary Job Title
Carrie’s appreciation for rural living traces back to her childhood in Oklahoma, long before her 2004 audition for “American Idol.”
Parenting presented Carrie and Mike with the challenge of providing their children with a normal upbringing despite their extraordinary careers. At home, preparing breakfast and packing lunches took precedence, along with doing school runs.
Speaking with SiriusXM, Carrie stated, “We eat dinner at least five nights a week at the dinner table, and it’s something I cooked.” She added, “I don’t know if it’s good or not, but we ain’t starving.”
According to a source who spoke with Us, Carrie enjoys teaching her boys about growing vegetables and caring for animals. “She loves her career and creating and performing, but as she has said, that’s not her real life. Her true life is at home with her family.”
Their Family Happiness Required Compromise
Maintaining family time required effort, especially with both parents engaged in demanding careers. Mike played for the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators, briefly returning from retirement in 2018. An insider described balancing their different professional paths as the couple’s biggest challenge.
In March 2025, Carrie returned to the judging panel of “American Idol” for its 23rd season, becoming the first winner to achieve this role. Alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, she found fulfillment in her workplace, sharing with Us in April 2026, “I feel like everybody is very respectful, and we have fun. And life’s too short not to, you know?”
Her 72-show “Reflection” residency in Las Vegas concluded in April 2025 after nearly four years. Although Mike and their sons traveled with her, a source mentioned that this arrangement required significant lifestyle adjustments and that Carrie needed a break, despite enjoying the engagement.
In 2026, Carrie planned to launch her wellness brand HiNote while also scheduling a short summer tour, with the Wildlands Festival in Big Sky, Montana, being among the planned stops. At home, she continued training with her longtime trainer Eve Overland and enjoyed outdoor running. Her close friend Ivey Childers, married to her bandleader, was also part of her local circle.
Mike remained retired from hockey, focusing on business ventures and spending substantial time indulging in hunting and fishing. This last interest highlighted a stark contrast between him and Carrie, a vegetarian who openly expressed her love for animals.
In their web series “Mike and Carrie: God & Country,” Mike candidly confessed, “Carrie does not like hunting one bit.” To which she responded, “If he could be a vegan/vegetarian, my life would be almost perfect.”
They also faced deeper heartbreak, having experienced three miscarriages between the births of their sons. Their faith aided them in navigating these struggles as well as the challenges of being apart. An insider described Mike as more reserved and traditional in his approach, while Carrie was more open-minded, emphasizing their shared beliefs and the compromises they navigated.
“As supportive as he is of her career, he’s a guy who wants normalcy,” the insider noted. “They are a very traditional couple living a not-so-traditional life.”
For Carrie, normalcy came with a beautiful home and a high likelihood of getting messy before dinner. Judging by the love she infused into the property, those muddy boots had undoubtedly found their rightful place.
