Jimmy Fallon Heartbroken After Losing His ‘First Baby’ Shares Emotional Tribute
Jimmy Fallon is grieving the heartbreaking loss of his loyal companion, Gary, the golden retriever who had been part of his family for more than thirteen years.
On Monday, October 20, the Tonight Show host shared a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram, honoring the beloved pet who had been by his family’s side through every season of life.

“She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl and a rebel,” Fallon wrote. “She was the last name we signed on every birthday card.”
A Family Member in Every Sense
Gary, an English cream golden retriever, wasn’t just a pet — she was truly part of the Fallon family. Fallon, 51, reflected on her joyful spirit and the countless ways she brought laughter into their home.
“Definitely not a watchdog,” he joked. “She would have let burglars in and shown them where we kept the bacon and American cheese slices.”
Fallon’s heartfelt post painted a vivid picture of Gary’s personality — a dog who loved attention, swimming, and sunshine.
“She would jump into the pool right after being shampooed and dried — then she’d do her laps and lie on the grass doing bunny kicks with her tongue sticking out. That meant summer to me.”
He added, “Always smiling even when she slept. She loved a good scratch and would lean into you if she liked you — which, honestly, was just about everyone.”

Remembering 13 Beautiful Years
Fallon shared that his family — wife Nancy Juvonen, 58, and their daughters Franny, 10, and Winnie, 12 — are struggling to adjust to the silence Gary left behind.
“Franny, Winnie, Mommy and I miss you. The house misses you. The house is so quiet. The quiet is so loud,” he wrote. “But that quiet is slowly being filled with stories about you and laughter amongst the sniffles. Thank you for everything. Gosh, we miss you so much. Goodnight, Gary.”
The post included a carousel of touching family photos — Gary lounging in the sun, playing in the pool, and cuddling beside Fallon and his daughters. Fans flooded the comments with condolences and messages of love for the late family dog.
How Gary Came Into Fallon’s Life
Fallon first met Gary years ago during a comedy bit on his late-night show.
“She came out to do a segment — I think she was a political pundit,” he told PEOPLE in 2017. “I was having a debate with her, and she was dressed in a suit.”
At the time, Fallon and Juvonen were hoping to start a family, and adopting Gary brought comfort and joy during that chapter of their lives.
“We were trying to have kids,” he said. “So I think this was just a thing to distract us while we were working on that.”
The name “Gary Frick Jr.” came from that same on-air comedy bit — and it stuck.
“It’s companionship,” Fallon said in that same interview. “It’s so much love. It’s unconditional love. I try to do everything with my dog.”
A Legacy of Love
For Fallon, Gary wasn’t just a dog — she was a symbol of love, laughter, and comfort through life’s highs and lows. Her loss has touched fans worldwide who understand the special bond between humans and their pets.
“She was pure joy,” one fan wrote. “We all felt her spirit through your stories, Jimmy.”
As Fallon continues to process his loss, one thing remains clear: Gary’s memory will live on in his family’s hearts — and in the laughter she inspired both on and off the screen.
🕊️ Rest in peace, Gary Frick — forever loved, never forgotten.
