Just over a year after assuming the British throne, King Charles has received a cancer diagnosis.

The announcement was made earlier this week by Buckingham Palace, following a medical procedure the monarch underwent to address an enlarged prostate.

Specific details about the type of cancer Charles is facing are limited, although the Palace confirmed it is not prostate cancer. The King has commenced a regimen of regular treatments, personally informing close family members of his diagnosis.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” stated Buckingham Palace on Monday.

While public engagements will be postponed for treatment, the Palace remains optimistic about Charles’s prognosis.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

While speculation about the King’s health has emerged, the Palace has maintained discretion.

However, recent photos released by the royals may aim to reassure the public about Charles’s well-being. One image depicts the 75-year-old monarch appearing robust and well-dressed, signaling a deliberate effort by the Palace to ease concerns amidst news of his cancer diagnosis.

According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, the photo likely served as a calculated move to reassure the public about the King’s condition.

Reports indicate that Charles has already begun cancer treatment and maintains regular communication with his eldest son and heir, Prince William. Additionally, Prince Harry returned to the UK upon learning of his father’s diagnosis, holding a brief meeting with Charles on Tuesday, February 6, though there are no current plans for a meeting between Harry and William.
