Legendary Actress Sophia Loren, 89, Hospitalized for Urgent Procedure After Accident at Residence

Over the weekend, Sophia Loren had a serious accident at her home in Switzerland that led to her being hospitalized. The 89-year-old legendary actress, known for her roles in films like “Two Women” (1961) and “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” (1963), suffered multiple injuries requiring urgent medical attention.

Among her injuries, the most severe was a fracture in her femur, necessitating immediate surgery. This unfortunate incident occurred shortly after her 89th birthday, just before she was set to unveil a restaurant bearing her name in Bari, Italy on September 26.

Unfortunately, the Italian icon slipped in her bathroom, resulting in the injuries mentioned earlier. Currently, Sophia’s sons, Carlo and Edoardo, are by her side in the hospital. Although her condition is stable, it’s anticipated that she will need an extended period of rehabilitation.

According to sources cited by the Hollywood Reporter, there is a sense of cautious optimism regarding Sophia Loren’s recovery after the successful femur surgery.

The team behind the restaurant she was about to open posted on Instagram: “Today, a fall at her home in Geneva resulted in Ms. Loren sustaining hip fractures. After a successful operation, she will need a brief recovery period followed by a rehabilitation process. Fortunately, everything went well, and we can expect the Lady to be back with us very soon. The entire team at Sophia Loren Restaurant seizes this moment to wish her a swift recovery.”

Sophia Loren’s last film appearance was in the Netflix movie “The Life Ahead” (2020). Upon its release, she expressed her strong determination to continue working in the film industry, stating, “I have such a deep love for cinema. I want to do it for as long as I can. I understand that finding good stories can be challenging, but sometimes I fall in love with just the right ones. My plan is to make movies indefinitely.”
