Meghan Markle Faces Backlash Over Expensive Outfit Choice During Fire Victim Visit

As wildfires continue to devastate Southern California, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has become the center of public debate, with many questioning her actions and choices.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been active in supporting those affected by the wildfires. On Friday, January 10, 2025, they visited Pasadena for the second time in a week, sparking mixed reactions online. They met with Mayor Victor Gordo to discuss recovery efforts and spent time with first responders and victims of the Eaton Fire at the Pasadena Convention Center.

The couple distributed food and supplies to those affected by the fires and spoke about the recovery process. Earlier in the week, they also anonymously delivered food to displaced families.

However, their visit was met with criticism. Some people online expressed disapproval when Meghan was seen wearing an expensive Cartier bracelet during the visit. Many pointed out the contrast between her jewelry and the need for support in the wake of the disaster. One comment on social media read, “Photo ops … she shows up wearing 50k in Cartier jewelry lol.” Another user questioned why Meghan wore the bracelet at all, suggesting it was inappropriate for the situation.

Despite the negative comments, others praised the couple for their efforts, with some highlighting their genuine concern and actions. One user commented, “They’re always so caring and helpful to others.”

On the social media platform X, opinions were split. Some accused Meghan and Harry of using the visit for publicity, suggesting that they were more interested in photo opportunities than helping those in need. Others defended the couple, pointing out that they were there to assist people and spread awareness about the ongoing crisis.

Filmmaker Justine Bateman also criticized the couple, calling their visit a “photo op” and accusing them of being “disaster tourists.” She questioned whether they were genuinely helping or just seeking attention.

However, in an official statement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle emphasized the seriousness of the wildfire crisis, acknowledging the devastation to homes, schools, and medical centers. They encouraged people to donate to organizations like World Central Kitchen, CAL FIRE, and the LA Fire Department Foundation, as well as animal welfare groups and Baby2Baby, which are providing aid to those affected.

Meghan also announced that she would delay the release of her upcoming Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan,” to support those impacted by the fires. The show, originally set to premiere in January, will now launch in March 2025. Meghan explained that the delay would allow her to focus on the needs of wildfire victims in California.

Additionally, the couple has opened their Montecito home to friends and loved ones who were displaced by the fires. Their foundation, Archewell, has been working with relief agencies to help with both short-term and long-term recovery efforts. Donations through Archewell have supported providing meals, mental health services, and essential supplies to those in need.

Since the fires began on January 7, 2025, they have forced over 100,000 residents to evacuate, and homes, schools, and medical facilities have been destroyed. The fires remain out of control, and first responders continue to fight to protect affected communities.

While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s involvement in the relief efforts has sparked controversy, it has also helped raise awareness about the severe impact of the wildfires and the ongoing need for assistance. Their actions, whether seen as genuine or performative, have highlighted the importance of community support during times of crisis.
