Old Lady Believed Her Husband Was Dead — Until She Saw Him Alive and with Someone New
|Catherine was heartbroken when she heard that her husband had died in the fire that destroyed their home. But years later, her heartbreak turned to shock when she saw him with a young woman on TV.
George and Catherine Wilson had been together since their university days. They got married soon after graduation and enjoyed a happy marriage for 51 years.
George worked as a doctor at Miami Valley Hospital until he retired. After that, he spent most of his time teaching young nurses and doctors at their home. Catherine, who was once a well-known gynecologist at the same hospital, became a homemaker and helped her husband with his lessons.
The couple didn’t have children, but spending time with eager young students kept them from feeling lonely.
One evening, George was preparing for his lecture when he noticed a burning smell. “Honey, did you leave the gas on?” he asked Catherine. She often made tea for him before his classes, so he thought it was coming from the kitchen. But it wasn’t.
“No,” Catherine replied from her room. “It’s probably Mrs. Peterson. She and her family often burn wood logs in their garden at night. Can you please close the windows? The smell is choking me.”
Confused, George closed the windows before checking around the house. When he reached the other side of the house, he found one of the rooms on fire.
“Honey!” he shouted as he rushed to their bedroom. “We have to leave now! The fire is spreading fast!”
George and Catherine tried to escape, but by then, the smoke had filled the room. Catherine, who had asthma, fainted, and George, in an attempt to save her, was also trapped.
Catherine was unconscious for nearly two months after the fire. When she woke up, she was in a nursing home and learned that George had died in the fire, and their house had been destroyed. She cried for hours and felt the loneliness of being all alone for the first time.
Thankfully, Stephanie, one of George’s students and a nurse at the hospital, stayed by Catherine’s side during this time. She helped move Catherine to the nursing home and visited her every day.
“I’m so grateful for your help, Steph,” Catherine said one day. “But I need one more favor.”
“Of course, ma’am,” Stephanie replied. “What do you need?”
“Can I see George just one more time? Please, can you check if that’s possible?” Catherine’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry, ma’am,” Stephanie said. “His body was in very bad condition after the fire. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to see him.”
But Catherine insisted, and when she saw George’s body, it was impossible to recognize him. The fire had changed him so much.
The following week, Catherine arranged George’s funeral, with Stephanie supporting her through the process. After the funeral, Catherine felt the emptiness again.
One day, Catherine decided to watch television with the other nursing home residents. She hadn’t watched TV in six years, but as she looked closely at the screen, she froze.
“Is that really George?” she thought, wiping away her tears. She adjusted her glasses and stared harder. Then something caught her attention.
“Wait, who is that young woman? And why did she just kiss George?” She moved closer to the screen. “Could I be mistaken? Is that even George?”
To her shock, it was George and Stephanie on TV, posing for a variety show at a resort in Dayton, Miami.
Catherine rushed to a nurse, Rose, who worked at the facility. “Rose, is that George on the TV?” she asked, showing her a picture of George.
“Yes, ma’am,” Rose said. “But wait, isn’t that your husband? Who’s the woman with him?”
“That’s Stephanie,” Catherine replied, her voice shaking. “She told me George was dead. I can’t believe this. Did they plan this together? Was the fire just a way to get rid of me?” Tears started streaming down her face.
“I don’t think so, ma’am,” Rose said. “There were many other ways for him to get rid of you. Why would he burn down his own house? Maybe you should call the police.”
Catherine followed Rose’s advice and called 911. What she found out was a dark secret Stephanie had been hiding.
It turned out that when George was in college, he had an affair with a woman named Clara, who was pregnant with Stephanie at the time. George had planned to take responsibility for the child, but things went wrong, and he had to leave Clara.
Years later, Stephanie sought revenge. She set the fire at George’s house and forged documents claiming that she was pregnant with his child. The police arrested her after they investigated.
When Catherine and George finally met after six years at the police station, they both cried.
“I’m so sorry, honey,” George said, holding Catherine. “When I woke up, I was in a completely different place. Stephanie told me you were dead before you even got to the hospital.”
“I shouldn’t have trusted her,” he continued. “When I lost you, I was devastated and drank to forget. Stephanie was always there for me, so I thought I might have crossed the line when drunk. But nothing ever happened.”
George explained the situation with Clara and how things had fallen apart. He wished that if Stephanie had known the truth, things might have been different.
He turned to Stephanie, who was standing nearby. “You could have told me the truth about being Clara’s daughter, and we would have helped you. There was no need to do all of this. I hope you regret what you did now.”
As the police handcuffed Stephanie, she apologized to George but stood there, embarrassed. Before she could say more, George and Catherine walked away hand in hand, hugging each other tightly.
