Robert Redford’s Final Days Marked by ‘Intense Sadness’ After Personal Heartbreak
|Sundance, UT — Hollywood legend Robert Redford passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind not only a remarkable cinematic legacy but also a lifetime marked by personal tragedy. In his final years, those close to him say the actor carried an “intense sadness” following the devastating loss of his son, James “Jamie” Redford.
A Father’s Heartbreak
According to former neighbors in Tiburon, California, Redford never fully recovered from the death of Jamie, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 58 from bile-duct cancer in the liver.
Redford, a devoted father of four with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen, endured more than one heartbreaking loss. His first son, Scott Anthony, died at just two months old in 1959 due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Decades later, the death of Jamie brought that grief back into sharp focus.
“He felt like a part of him had been lost,” a local waiter recalled. “Bob would come in every week with his wife and friends, always kind, always gracious. But after his son’s death, there was an intense sadness to him. He talked about how much he missed his boy. It took a toll on him.”
Remembering Jamie Redford
Jamie was remembered not only as Redford’s beloved son but also as a filmmaker, husband, and father. A representative for Robert Redford shared his heartbreak at the time of Jamie’s passing, telling People:
“The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child. Jamie was a loving son, husband, and father. His legacy lives on through his children, art, filmmaking, and his devoted passion for conservation and the environment.”
A Lifetime of Loss and Resilience
Redford himself had spoken about the trauma of losing his first child, Scott, in a 2017 Esquire UK interview:
“I was only 21; my wife was 20. We were just starting our lives. Of course, it was traumatic. You have to move on, but something like that never completely leaves you. It shows up in ways you don’t even realize. Particularly when you’re that young, you’re not equipped to deal with it.”
Despite these tragedies, Redford dedicated his life to his children, his artistry, and his causes. Friends and locals remembered seeing him hiking the trails around Tiburon, often dressed in a cap and sunglasses but still recognizable as one of Hollywood’s most respected figures.
A Legendary Career
Beyond his personal struggles, Robert Redford’s career was nothing short of extraordinary. He became a household name with timeless films including Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate, and The Sting.
In 2002, he received an Honorary Academy Award for his contributions to film. He was also celebrated for his humanitarian efforts, from environmental activism to supporting Native American rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the arts.
A Life That Inspired Millions
Redford is survived by his second wife, Sibylle Szaggars, daughters Shauna and Amy, and seven grandchildren. Though his final years were touched by sorrow, his life remains a testament to resilience, creativity, and compassion.
Even in grief, Robert Redford’s story is one of strength, leaving behind a legacy not only on the silver screen but in the lives he touched through his activism, artistry, and enduring humanity.
