I definitely carried that weight.”
Her pain led to a suicide attempt when she was a teenager. Looking back on that time, she shared, “It was years of abuse, mixed with depression and substance use. Drugs and alcohol only made things worse. I reached a breaking point.”
At 17, Mallette discovered she was pregnant with Justin. Many people pressured her to end the pregnancy, but she stood by her decision to keep her baby. “I realized I just couldn’t do it,” Mallette recalled. “I had no idea how I would manage, but I was determined to try. I had to give him a chance.”
That strength carried her through the struggles of being a young, single mother. When Justin was born, Mallette says she will never forget the first sound he made. “I know it sounds strange, but his cry sounded like music,” she said, smiling. “It was like, ‘A hah, a hah,’ and I thought, ‘This is the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard.’ I just wanted to hold him forever.”
