Shocking Reason Kevin Costner Walked Away from ‘Yellowstone’ After 5 Seasons
|After much discussion, Kevin Costner announced in June 2024 that he would leave *Yellowstone* due to his commitment to a special project he has been working on for some time.
*Yellowstone*, the popular Western series, features Kevin Costner as John Dutton, a tough rancher fighting to protect his family’s land in Montana from outside threats. Since its debut in 2018, Costner has been a key part of the show, appearing in 53 episodes. However, in an unexpected move, he decided to leave the show after completing the first half of the 5th and final season (5A) for several personal reasons.
Ahead of Yellowstone’s return for season 5B on November 10, 2024, Kevin Costner was asked about his character’s role, especially since he has a limited presence in the trailer. He explained, “His presence is integral. I think to say any more than that would potentially spoil the work that went into keeping the scripts under wraps!” He added with a laugh, “People are wondering ‘Is he, isn’t he? Where is he, where is he not?’ because John Dutton is the patriarch, and his presence is central to the story.”
Although the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, keeps scripts confidential, director Christina Voros explained that the secrecy was due to several factors. She said the popularity of Yellowstone, the speculation about its ending, and Costner’s departure all contributed to the mystery. She praised Sheridan’s work on the finale, calling it “beautiful, surprising, and riveting.”
Voros also noted that after seven years, the cast had grown deeply into their roles, leading to exceptional performances. She emphasized that the actors, who understood their characters and Sheridan’s vision, had given their best work this season.
As for Costner’s exit, it’s believed there were scheduling conflicts. Sources claim that Costner initially agreed to 65 days of shooting for Yellowstone but later cut that down to 50 days for season 5. For the second half of the season, he only planned to film for one week due to his other commitments.
By February 2023, Costner was already working on his Western film series Horizon: An American Saga, which he co-wrote with Jon Baird. The films, picked up by Warner Bros. and New Line, became his priority. Sources say that his focus on Horizon led to issues on the Yellowstone set, and it reportedly caused frustration among his co-stars.
In 2023, Paramount Network rejected Costner’s proposal to stay, leading to the possibility of a new Yellowstone spinoff, with Matthew McConaughey in talks to take over as the lead.
When Costner spoke about balancing Yellowstone and Horizon in May 2024, he admitted he had been unhappy with how the situation was handled, saying, “It wasn’t truthful.” His contract, originally covering five to seven seasons, was renegotiated in February 2024 to cover only 5A and 5B, with a possible sixth season. However, Costner clarified, “They weren’t able to make those,” as Horizon conflicted with Yellowstone’s shooting schedule.
Costner expressed his excitement for Horizon’s premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, but he also opened up about his frustration with how the Yellowstone situation was handled. He felt misrepresented and explained, “I made Yellowstone the first priority, but they just kept moving their gaps.”
He revealed that he was ready to help with filming 5B but was met with incomplete scripts. He said, “I left early to give them what they needed for the first eight episodes, but they didn’t have the scripts for the rest.” Costner added that he offered to work for one more week to finish his character’s storyline but was unable to offer more time due to his other commitments.
In June 2024, Costner shared a video on Instagram announcing he wouldn’t return for season 5B, after working on Horizon for over a year and a half. He expressed his love for the show and the fans but confirmed that he wouldn’t be continuing. Fans were disappointed, with many commenting that it was a “bad decision” and “super disappointing.”
Taylor Sheridan, while acknowledging the challenges with Costner’s departure, praised him as an actor and expressed his appreciation for Costner’s portrayal of John Dutton. However, he admitted that Costner’s decision impacted the closure of his character’s story arc, even if it didn’t change it entirely. Sheridan also mentioned that the legal issues and lack of communication affected their relationship.
Costner clarified that leaving Yellowstone wasn’t a tough decision for him, as he had dedicated five seasons to the show. He expressed his desire to move forward and continue creating projects that his fans would appreciate.
Now, Costner is focused on his film series Horizon: An American Saga, which premiered its first chapter in June 2024. The second chapter debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, and two more chapters are in the works. While reports suggest he needs more funding to complete the project, it marks a major milestone after 35 years of effort.
