Single Dad Saves Sick Boy from Starvation—21 Years Later, He Stuns the World at the Olympics
|Jerry Windle always dreamed of being a father, even as a single gay man. When he adopted a little boy from Cambodia, he had no idea his son would one day inspire the world.
Two decades ago, Jerry was in his mid-30s, navigating a tough time. After his mother passed away, he decided to move from California to Florida and change careers. Despite wanting to adopt, opportunities were rare for single gay men. But one day, while waiting at a doctor’s office, he read a magazine article that reignited his hope.
The article shared the story of a single gay man adopting a child from Cambodia. Inspired, Jerry reached out to a Cambodian orphanage. Soon, he received a picture of a boy named Pisey, meaning “little darling.” Jerry instantly felt a connection.
### Jerry’s Journey to Fatherhood
Jerry sent a photo of himself and a necklace to the boy, asking the agency to explain that he was his father and would come to bring him home. A few months later, Jerry arrived in Cambodia and met two-year-old Pisey, who he renamed Jordan.
Jordan was severely malnourished and weighed only 16 pounds. Unsure how long the boy would survive, Jerry promised to do everything he could to give him a better life. He vowed Jordan would never suffer again.
Five months after starting the adoption process, Jerry brought Jordan home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in June 2000. Little did he know he was raising a future Olympian.
### Jordan’s Talent for Diving
At seven, Jordan discovered his love for diving during an aquatics summer camp. After seeing him jump off a diving board, the camp leader told Jerry that Jordan had the potential to become a national champion—or even an Olympian.
Jerry supported Jordan’s passion, enrolling him in diving lessons. Two years later, Jordan won his first junior national championship, an extraordinary achievement for such a young diver. At 16, he returned to Cambodia for a diving exhibition, where he shared his story with local children.
“Talking to them through a translator and explaining how my dad helped me become who I am today was amazing,” Jordan said.
### The Olympic Journey
Six years later, Jordan fulfilled his camp leader’s prediction by representing the United States at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He competed in the 10-meter platform dive after qualifying on his third attempt. Despite the challenges, Jordan carried the Cambodian flag tattooed on his arm to honor his birth country.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Jerry couldn’t attend the Olympics. Jordan expressed that while he missed his father’s presence, he was determined to perform his best. “I’m going to show off and put on a show for everyone. I hope to make him proud,” he said.
Jordan revealed that he dives “purely” for his father, crediting Jerry’s sacrifices and love for his success. He thanked his dad for changing his life and for their incredible journey together.
### Celebrating Their Bond
Jerry and Jordan co-wrote a book called *An Orphan No More: The True Story of a Boy*, sharing their inspiring story through animal characters. The book highlights the transformative power of love.
On Father’s Day 2023, Jordan shared childhood photos with Jerry on Instagram, expressing his love and gratitude. He encouraged his dad to enjoy life and celebrate all the hard work he’s done for others.
Jerry’s dedication and Jordan’s determination serve as a reminder of the impact of unconditional love. Their story continues to inspire people around the world.
