Taiwanese Superstar Barbie Hsu’s Tragic Passing at 48

Barbie Hsu, the actress who became famous for playing Shan Cai in the 2001 hit drama Meteor Garden, has passed away. Her family has shared more details about her sudden death.

Taiwanese actress and singer Barbie Hsu died at the age of 48 due to pneumonia caused by the flu. Her family confirmed the sad news on Monday, February 3.

Rumors about her passing started spreading online on Sunday, February 2. The speculation grew stronger when her ex-husband, Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, reportedly changed his social media profile picture to black. Later, Barbie’s younger sister, entertainer Dee Hsu, confirmed the news.

Dee released a statement to Taiwanese news outlet TVBS News, saying, “Thank you all for your concern! Our family traveled to Japan during the New Year holiday. Sadly, my dearest and kindest sister, Xiyuan, passed away due to flu-related pneumonia.”

She continued, “I am grateful to have been her sister in this lifetime. We cared for each other and supported each other. I will always miss her. Shan~ Rest in peace! Love you always—Together, remember forever.”

After the news of Barbie’s passing, many friends, colleagues, and organizations shared their condolences and paid tribute to her.

On Facebook, PETA Asia honored Barbie for her dedication to animal rights. They described her as one of the “first and biggest stars” to support their cause. She used her fame to raise awareness about the cruelty of the fur industry.

Barbie also encouraged brands to stop selling fur and used her artistic talents to advocate for circus animals.

Her Meteor Garden co-star Jerry Yan was heartbroken. On Weibo, he shared a touching tribute to his former on-screen partner. He wrote, “Thank you for the chance to meet you. You always said, ‘Live each day as if it were the last and enjoy it to the fullest.’ This time, may you take your time and walk slowly. In another world, may you have peace and no worries.”

Barbie Hsu was born Hsi-yuan Hsu on October 6, 1976. She started her entertainment career in 1994 with her sister Dee as part of the pop duo SOS, later renamed ASOS. The two sisters also hosted popular shows like Guess, 100% Entertainment, and Gourmet Secrets of the Stars before Barbie moved into acting.

She became a household name in 2001 after playing Shan Cai in Meteor Garden. She later starred in popular dramas like Mars, Corner With Love, and Summer’s Desire.

Barbie also appeared in movies, including Connected in 2008 and Croczilla in 2012, proving her talent extended beyond television.
