‘Today’ Host Meredith Vieira Mourns the Loss of Husband Richard Cohen — Heartbreaking Details Revealed
|The famous journalist and author has died at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of strength and excellent reporting.
CBS News veteran and advocate for people with chronic illnesses, Richard Cohen, passed away on December 24, 2024. In addition to his work as a writer and journalist, Cohen was well-known as the husband of former “Today” show host, Meredith Vieira.
Cohen lived with multiple sclerosis for over 50 years and also beat cancer twice. He was open about his struggles, helping others understand the challenges of living with chronic conditions.
He wrote several books about his health experiences, sharing his journey to inspire others. “I think too many people stay quiet and don’t tell the truth,” he said during a 2014 interview on “Today.”
Cohen and Vieira were married for 38 years and had three children: sons Ben and Gabe, and daughter Lily. Cohen once shared that he told Vieira about his illness early in their relationship.
“I told her about my illness because I learned it’s better to be honest right away,” Cohen said in an interview. “And she didn’t even blink.”
Vieira, who left her job on “Today” in 2011 to spend more time with her family, once said, “Time is something you can never have enough of, and it keeps moving.” She always made it clear that her family, especially her husband, was her top priority.
Cohen’s work as a journalist, writer, and advocate will continue to inspire many, especially those who connected with his honesty. Our deepest condolences go to Meredith Vieira, their children, and everyone who knew him during this hard time.
