They asked Ronaldo for a pair of boots
When Erik Ortiz Cruz was just months old, his family faced something no parent should. Their little boy, a 10-month-old from Spain, had been born with a rare brain condition that triggered as many as 30 seizures a day. The only hope was surgery. The cost was somewhere around 83,000 dollars, money the family simply did not have.

So they started a campaign, and had an idea. Erik was a Real Madrid fan. What if they reached out to his favorite player?
Through their “Todos Somos Erik” effort, the family got a message to Cristiano Ronaldo. The ask was modest: would he donate a signed pair of boots, maybe a shirt, something they could auction to chip away at the enormous bill?
Ronaldo sent the boots. He sent a signed shirt too.
And then he did something they never asked for and never expected. He quietly offered to pay for the entire surgery himself, and pledged to cover any follow-up treatment Erik might need down the line.
No press conference. No grand announcement. The news only emerged through the Spanish press afterward. For a player often painted as all ego and no heart, it was a reminder that the biggest gestures are sometimes the quietest ones.
