Rich Woman Hears Son Insult Beggar, Realizes He’s the Key to Her Fortune
|A wealthy woman became upset when she overheard her son mocking a beggar. However, when she looked at the man’s face, she recognized him as someone who had mysteriously vanished from her life eight years ago.
Lacey always dreamed of becoming a lawyer from the age of ten. Sadly, it was during her childhood that tragedy struck. Her parents, who were both lawyers, died in a car accident, leaving her orphaned.
Afterward, Lacey’s grandmother stepped in to care for her. The one promise Lacey made to her grandmother was to become a good lawyer and honor her parents’ memory.
Years later, Lacey graduated at the top of her class from a prestigious law school and successfully built her own law firm. However, she wasn’t as successful at teaching her son, Aaron, to respect others, especially those in need.
One day, Lacey and Aaron traveled to a nearby town for a case she was handling. Her husband was on a business trip, and Aaron, being too young to stay home alone, had to come along.
“If you cause any trouble, we’re going right back, and you’ll be grounded for a week!” Lacey warned. “Okay, Mom! I won’t trouble you, promise!” Aaron replied.
Aaron remained quiet for most of the trip, but eventually, boredom set in, and he started asking questions that Lacey didn’t want to answer.
“Are we going to meet a criminal? Is it going to be like a James Bond movie? Are we solving a serious case?” Aaron asked excitedly.
Lacey smiled. “I can’t share details with a little boy. How about you watch something on your iPad while I drive?”
“But Mom, can’t you tell me if we’re going to arrest bad guys?” Aaron pleaded.
Lacey laughed. “Not all cases involve bad guys. This one is actually quite simple. I’m meeting an elderly client who can’t come to my office.”
“Boring!” Aaron sighed. “This isn’t fun! I should’ve stayed home. And I’m hungry.”
“You just ate a tuna sandwich,” Lacey reminded him.
“I’m still hungry! Mom, stop at that store! I need snacks! Please?”
Lacey pulled over, unbuckled her seatbelt, and said, “Fine. Do you want anything else? I’ll get it for you, but stay in the car.”
Just then, Lacey’s phone rang—it was the client. Distracted, she handed Aaron her credit card and told him to cross the street safely and buy the snacks himself.
The call was long, and the client canceled the meeting. Frustrated, Lacey ended the call and walked into the store, only to find Aaron making fun of a poor man.
“You stink! Stay away, you dirtbag!” Aaron yelled, holding several snack packets.
“Please, young boy,” the man begged, “I just need a dollar to pay for my food. I haven’t eaten in days.”
“Go away!” Aaron snapped. “I don’t talk to strangers!”
The other shoppers stared at the man, who disappeared into an aisle. Aaron ran to Lacey, proudly announcing, “I got the snacks! Let’s go, Mom!”
“We’re not leaving until you apologize,” Lacey said sternly. “I saw what you did. You could’ve helped him.”
“But he stank!” Aaron complained. “And he looked weird!”
“That’s no excuse,” Lacey replied. “He just wanted help. Come on, we’re going to apologize.”
They found the man sitting on the floor in the milk aisle, crying.
“Sir,” Lacey said gently. “I’m sorry for my son’s behavior.”
When the man looked up, Lacey was stunned. His face was wrinkled and tired, but she recognized him—he was the man who had disappeared from her life eight years ago.
“Mr. Rutledge? Oh my God, it’s you!” she gasped.
The man didn’t recognize her. “I don’t know… I’m just a poor man, and I’m hungry,” he said.
“You don’t remember me? I’m Lacey, your student!”
“I don’t know…” he sobbed. “Please leave me alone.”
Though confused, Lacey comforted him and brought him to her home. He took a bath, wore her husband’s clothes, and cried after eating a homemade meal. He hadn’t shared much, except that he was homeless and survived by begging.
Lacey took him to a doctor, who explained that Mr. Rutledge had lost his memory in a severe accident. Treatment could help, but full recovery wasn’t guaranteed.
Determined, Lacey took care of Mr. Rutledge like family. He had been her professor in law school and had chosen her for a foreign internship, which jump-started her career. After he disappeared, Lacey helped his family, but no one knew what had happened to him.
Slowly, Mr. Rutledge began remembering bits of his past. He had been attacked during a trip, losing all his belongings and ID. Without knowing where to go, he had lived on the streets.
It took years for him to regain his memory and return to his family, but Lacey never gave up on him. She stood by his side, helping him rebuild the life he had lost.
