Keith Urban Switches Up Song Lyrics From Nicole Kidman Romance to Shoutout for Guitarist Maggie

Just days after news broke of his split from Nicole Kidman, country superstar Keith Urban made headlines for an unexpected onstage moment that left fans buzzing.

During a recent performance of his hit song The Fighter — a track originally written about his early romance with Kidman — Urban changed the lyrics in a way that surprised both the audience and his tourmate, rising country artist Maggie Baugh.

A Lyric Swap That Sparked Attention

In a clip shared on Instagram by Baugh, 25, the original lyric “When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter” was altered. Instead, Urban sang:

“When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”

Baugh, clearly stunned, reacted with two emojis over the video and captioned it with: “Did he just say that.”

The video, posted on September 26, came only days before news of Urban and Kidman’s separation went public.

Divorce After 19 Years of Marriage

On September 29, sources confirmed that Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, had separated after nearly two decades together. The following day, Kidman officially filed for divorce in Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences. Court documents revealed their date of separation matched the filing date, September 30.

The couple, who wed in June 2006, share two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. Kidman is also mom to Bella, 32, and Connor, 30, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.

The Song That Began as a Love Letter

The Fighter, released in 2016 on Urban’s ninth studio album Ripcord, was inspired by his early conversations with Kidman.

“It’s all from a conversation my wife and I had early on in our relationship,” Urban told Billboard in 2017. “When things get tough, I need to hold her tighter and take care of her. The song is like a vow — about healing, protecting, and cherishing someone you love.”

He described Kidman as “female and tender”, adding: “That’s my job as her husband, to put myself around her so she can remain that way.”

The track, which became a fan favorite, was once celebrated as a symbol of their enduring love. Now, with the couple’s separation, its altered lyrics take on a much different meaning.

Touring Through the Turmoil

Urban and Baugh toured together this summer as part of his High and Alive World Tour, with more shows scheduled through mid-October. He also has international concerts booked in the Bahamas and the U.K. for March 2026.

Despite the whirlwind, a source close to Urban admitted he has “just been going through some stuff” in recent months. Meanwhile, a source from Kidman’s circle added: “He has been making questionable choices for some time now, and this wasn’t simply a case of drifting apart.”

The End of an Era

For years, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were admired as one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples, balancing film sets, tours, and family life. Their marriage, once immortalized in song, has now entered a painful new chapter.

Still, fans continue to watch closely — not only for updates on their separation, but also for the music and performances that Urban is channeling through this turbulent time.
