A 19-year-old signed a lease without seeing the apartment first.

In 2021, 19-year-old Madison Kohout was getting ready to move from Oklahoma to Arkansas.

She was working as a nursing assistant and needed a place to live. Then her mom found the perfect listing online.

A two-bedroom apartment. Just $350 a month.

Madison jumped on it. She signed the lease and moved in without ever seeing the place in person.

It was spacious. It was quiet. It felt like home.

But as the days went by, she started noticing something about her neighbors.

Every single one of them seemed to be over the age of 65.

About a week after she moved in, she spotted a sign out front.

“Senior Citizen Apartments.”

Madison had accidentally moved into a retirement community.

The complex was open to anyone, so legally they couldn’t turn her away because of her age. But it was designed for seniors, and out of 10 apartments, she was the only teenager in sight.

She shared the story on TikTok, and it was watched more than 3 million times.

But Madison wasn’t upset. She loved it.

Her neighbors checked on her when she got home. They shared home-cooked meals and stories from their lives.

She said it felt like getting extra sets of grandparents.

And she had some advice for anyone struggling with rent.
