On March 2, 2025, the 97th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Among the presenters were Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn. Andrew gave a heartfelt speech about Goldie, honoring her career.

During the event, which celebrated movies from 2024, Andrew held Goldie’s hand as he got emotional. He shared, “There’s someone who gave my mother the most joy and comfort during her life, and tonight, I feel lucky because I get to thank that person. That person is Goldie Hawn.”

Goldie blushed at his words and playfully tried to hide behind the award envelope. She thanked Andrew, saying, “That really touches me.”

Andrew then said he could feel his late mother, Lynn Garfield, smiling at them. Goldie, smiling back, replied, “I know, I’m smiling too.” Andrew went on to talk about how Goldie’s movies have made people happy and lifted their spirits.

Goldie thanked him again and reflected on her love for acting. She said she was lucky to make movies and bring joy to people. Then, in a lighthearted moment, she joked that not everyone found her funny.

Revealing a health challenge, Goldie asked Andrew to read the next line from the teleprompter. She said, “Okay, sweetheart, can you read that? I can’t read it. I’m completely blind. I mean, I am!” Then she explained her condition, adding, “I have cataracts.”

Andrew quickly reassured her, “It’s okay, I’ve got you,” before reading from the teleprompter. A video shared by ABC News on X cut off before they announced the winner of the Best Animated Short Film award.

According to the Mayo Clinic, cataracts make the eye’s lens cloudy. People with cataracts may feel like they are looking through foggy glass, making it hard to see clearly.

The website also explains that blurry vision caused by cataracts can make reading, driving at night, or recognizing faces difficult. The condition develops slowly and may not cause major vision problems at first.

In the early stages, glasses or better lighting can help manage cataracts. But if vision problems start affecting daily life, doctors may recommend cataract surgery.

The clinic says cataract surgery is “generally a safe, effective procedure.” Sadly, cataracts are not the only health issue Goldie has faced in recent years.

In November 2024, the Oscar-winning actress spoke about her mental health struggles on the “Making Space with Hoda Kotb” podcast. She talked about dealing with anxiety and depression early in her career.

Goldie said that after landing her first big TV role in “Good Morning World,” she started feeling anxious. She recalled, “They wrote a part for me, and I called home and said, ‘Mom, you won’t believe this.’”

She continued, “Then I became anxious and had little panic attacks. I realized that whenever I went into a restaurant or crowded place, I’d get dizzy and want to leave.”

This sudden change in her emotions confused her because she had always been a happy child. She remembered, “Nothing bothered me. I was joyful. I didn’t know what happened to my joy.”

The actress added, “I lost my smile. I tried to fake it. I’ll never forget that. It’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.” Her anxiety became so strong that she worried about having panic attacks while filming.

She admitted, “I had to go back to my dressing room to calm down because I never knew when a panic attack would happen.” Determined to take control, she started therapy to cope with her anxiety.

Goldie revealed that she spent nine years in therapy. During that time, she learned important lessons about herself, the power of forgiveness, and handling other people’s opinions as she became famous.

Looking back, she said she felt out of place when she got the role in “Good Morning World.” She explained, “I didn’t want to do that. I was a dancer.”

Talking about her start in acting, she said, “I was just getting started.” The sudden change in her career made her feel like she had been “pulled out of one world and placed in another.”

Her personal experience taught her the importance of speaking openly about mental health. Goldie said, “We can’t live in the dark and wonder what’s wrong with us. We need to know that other people go through this, too.”

She added, “It’s important to acknowledge it. Because only when you acknowledge it can you fix it.”

The heartfelt Oscars moment between Andrew and Goldie quickly went viral. The “Amazing Spider-Man” star, 41, and the Hollywood legend, 79, touched audiences, but some people were also confused.

Viewers on X reacted to Andrew’s speech. One person questioned, “What a weird thing to say. What did he mean?” Another user explained that Andrew’s late mother, who died in 2019, was a huge fan of Goldie, making the tribute deeply personal. “His mom passed away in 2019. It was a tragic loss. He was thanking Goldie for being his mom’s idol,” the user wrote.

During his speech, Andrew said, “There’s a person who gave my mother the most joy and comfort during her life. Tonight, I feel lucky because I get to thank that person. That person is Goldie Hawn.”

Andrew has spoken before about losing his mother and how it changed him. While filming “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” his co-star Jessica Chastain and the production team made sure he had time to be with his mother in her final days. Losing her deeply affected him, making this Oscars moment even more meaningful.

However, some viewers thought the tribute was awkward. One person wrote, “And the award for most awkward moment goes to…?” Another commented, “I feel trapped watching this Goldie Hawn and Andrew Garfield moment.”

Some also noticed Goldie’s reaction. While Andrew was emotional, Goldie seemed unsure how to respond. One person joked, “Poor Andrew pouring his heart out to Goldie, and she’s like, ‘Okay.’” Another added, “It felt awkward on Goldie’s part.”

But others defended the moment. One viewer wrote, “People are so jaded… It was sweet and real. She was touched, as anyone would be to hear that their work meant so much to someone’s mom. He gave her a beautiful moment of kindness.”

In Hollywood, where awards show speeches are usually rehearsed, this emotional exchange stood out—whether people saw it as touching or awkward. Either way, it was one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

Speaking of unexpected moments, another major highlight was the Oscars debut of host Conan O’Brien.

Conan, hosting the event for the first time, made a joke about Kendrick Lamar and Drake that sparked controversy. Some thought it was inappropriate, while others defended his edgy humor.

Halfway through the show, Conan joked, “Well, we’re halfway through, which means it’s time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile.”

The audience had mixed reactions, with scattered laughs and claps. Conan quickly followed up with, “Don’t worry, I’m lawyered up.” Social media exploded with reactions, with many viewers criticizing the joke.

One person wrote, “The audience felt disgusted instead of cheering.” Another added, “Nobody’s laughing.” Someone else said, “He literally ruined the night.” Another user reacted, “That’s crazy!”

Another person commented, “Disrespect on another level. What happened to us?” But some viewers defended him. One called it “the funniest moment of the show.” Another fan wrote, “Conan is always hilarious!”

Even though people had different opinions, the joke about the rumored feud between Kendrick and Drake will be remembered as part of Oscar history.
