Hayden Panettieres Autopsy Results Are In – and a Neighbor Who Heard the Commotion That Day Is Speaking Out – Details

Details surrounding the final moments of the beloved star’s life are gradually emerging, though the exact events that transpired inside the South Carolina rental remain uncertain.

The inquiry into Hayden Panettiere’s unexpected passing is ongoing, and fresh revelations are helping to create a more complete, although still partial, understanding of what occurred in the residence where she was discovered unresponsive.

An autopsy has now been conducted, residents are recounting the ‘commotion’ they experienced on that day, and officials have disclosed a significant finding while questions linger regarding the cause of death for the 36-year-old actress.

As reported by Page Six, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office noted that a 911 call was made on August 16, 2026, around 1:51 p.m., concerning a cardiac arrest.

Emergency responders and EMS personnel arrived at the scene to find a woman in cardiac arrest. Despite their attempts at advanced cardiac life support, they were unable to revive her, and Panettiere was declared dead at 2:32 p.m.

The Coroner’s Office confirmed: ‘The deceased has been identified as Hayden [Lesley] Panettiere, 36, from California. She was found unresponsive inside the residence where she was temporarily staying.’

This information is particularly significant given the accounts from residents of the complex regarding Panettiere’s stay there.

Micah Lee, a neighbor, recounted to WYFF4 that he was at home that Sunday when he noticed unusual activity in the building. ‘It was yesterday afternoon, and there was just a lot of commotion in the hallway,’ Lee said. ‘The halls are pretty hollow, so sounds echo throughout.’

He continued, ‘I heard about someone collapsing. Then there were discussions of cardiac arrest. I can’t verify any of that; it’s just what I’ve heard.’

Lee’s account aligns with the Coroner’s Office confirming that the initial 911 call was related to a cardiac arrest, although the official cause of Panettiere’s death has yet to be announced.

Authorities have indicated through their preliminary investigation that there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Another resident from Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road shared a similarly unsettling perspective on the events, expressing shock upon learning of Panettiere’s death.

The resident stated, ‘I was shocked,’ noting that they had never seen Panettiere prior to the news of her passing. They were uncertain about how long she had been on the property and whether she had left her apartment during her stay.

The neighbor mentioned that management reached out to residents to assure them that the incident was not deemed criminal, alleviating fears for their safety. ‘It’s still pretty jarring to realize that someone of her stature was here, and then this tragedy occurred,’ the resident added.

They recalled police being present at the property for several hours, from around noon until 8 p.m. that day. The sight of the coroner’s vehicle indicated that a death had occurred, but they did not learn until the following morning that it was Panettiere.

Another detail that stood out to the neighbor was observing two men ‘sitting outside the apartment with police’ during the emergency response. ‘They appeared to be in shock, silent, and had their heads down,’ the neighbor recounted.

Additionally, the resident believes the apartment was being used as a rental, which Page Six confirmed to be an Airbnb.

As investigators worked to reconstruct the events, another element from the scene drew attention. Page Six noted that 911 dispatch audio described the emergency as an apparent ‘overdose,’ and Narcan was reportedly discovered on a mattress at the location.

Narcan is utilized to counteract opioid overdoses, but it remains unclear whether it was administered to Panettiere.

Importantly, neither the dispatch characterization nor the presence of Narcan provides clarity on Panettiere’s official cause of death. Authorities have indicated that a determination is still pending further investigation and additional testing.

The actress had openly discussed her struggles with opioid and alcohol addiction in the past. In a 2022 interview, Panettiere revealed that at just 15 years old, she was offered what she referred to as ‘happy pills’ prior to red-carpet events, according to a Page Six report on her addiction journey.

‘They were intended to make me lively during interviews,’ she recounted. ‘At that time, I had no idea this was inappropriate or what consequences it would bring regarding my addiction.’ She later acknowledged years of battling alcoholism, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety.

Panettiere also spoke openly about the painful decision she faced regarding custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. On the ‘On Purpose’ podcast in May 2026, she refuted the notion that she had simply chosen to give up her daughter.

‘The thought that anyone would believe I would willingly give away my child is heartbreaking,’ she expressed. ‘It couldn’t be further from the truth. It turned into a terrible cycle of fighting depression, anxiety, alcoholism, and substance abuse as I tried to find my way back.’

In more recent times, Panettiere had been active in promoting her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning.’ At what would become her final public appearance at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles on May 26, a source revealed to Page Six that Panettiere’s speech seemed ‘slow and slurred at times.’

Additionally, she had been coping with profound grief. Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen, passed away in February 2023 at 28 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. In a 2024 interview with People, she shared the devastating impact his loss had on her.

‘He was my only sibling, and I felt it was my duty to protect him,’ Panettiere reflected. ‘When I lost him, I felt like I lost half my soul.’ She noted that experiencing something so catastrophic shifted her perspective on daily challenges.

Given her deeply personal background, the speculation surrounding Panettiere’s final hours has understandably attracted attention, yet investigators are still keeping any conclusive explanations for her death under wraps.

Hayden Panettiere also discussed the heartbreaking loss of her brother Jansen in her memoir. At this event, she arrived with him at the NBC/Universal Golden Globe After Party at the Beverly Hilton on January 15, 2007, in Beverly Hills, California.

The findings from the autopsy are particularly significant in this context. Even though the examination has been completed, officials have not yet confirmed the cause or manner of death. The Coroner’s Office stated, ‘This investigation continues actively and no further details are available for release at this time.’

Nevertheless, the autopsy did clarify one critical aspect of Panettiere’s condition at the time of her death.

‘An autopsy was conducted today. The examination showed no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death.’

However, this still leaves the primary mystery unsolved. Further testing and inquiries will be necessary before authorities can definitively determine the cause of the sudden death of the ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’ star at the young age of 36.

Panettiere’s death was publicly announced by her father, Skip, who referred to her passing as an immense loss.

‘She was a remarkable light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, as well as to the millions who admired her on screen. We ask for privacy as our family copes with this unimaginable loss,’ he stated.

This detail is particularly striking as Hickerson was not merely a past partner. Their relationship had seen its share of arrests, allegations of abuse, a protective order, and a jail sentence.

Hickerson and Panettiere were first linked in August 2018, shortly after reports of her split from Klitschko. By May 2019, Hickerson was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with one felony for injuring a spouse, cohabitant, or girlfriend after his arrest over an alleged physical incident.

In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, or child’s parent, with other charges being dropped at sentencing.

He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of formal probation, required to attend 52 domestic violence classes, pay $500 in restitution, and was given a five-year protective order.

Panettiere had previously made a powerful statement about the abuse she endured. She explained that she was going public in hopes of encouraging others in abusive situations to seek help.

Despite everything, they remained together for a long time. At this event, she was seen with Brian Hickerson at the celebration of life for Jansen Panettiere on March 8, 2023, in Palisades, New York.

Despite this painful history, Panettiere and Hickerson’s relationship saw periods of reconciliation. He was the one accompanying her the day before her death, but available reports do not suggest Hickerson had any role in her passing.

Hickerson’s family was reportedly aware of Panettiere’s death. Further information regarding their trip, such as their accommodation and the reasons behind their journey, is not readily available.
