Investigation Into Her Death Underway

Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death through a statement on Sunday evening, just five days shy of what would have been her 37th birthday. He expressed, ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,’ as reported by NBC News.

Kasey Kitchen, her publicist, mentioned that the circumstances surrounding the actress’s death were being examined but did not provide further information initially. Police in Greenville, South Carolina, stated that emergency services responded to a report of an unresponsive woman around 1:50 p.m. on that Sunday.

She was declared dead on-site and later confirmed to be Panettiere. A person known to her had made the 911 call. While investigators noted no immediate evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances, the case remains actively reviewed by the Greenville Police Department in collaboration with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Identifying Her Flight Companion

Hayden Panettiere and Brian Hickerson had a notoriously turbulent relationship, including an incident where Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in jail following domestic violence charges. Though they later reconnected as sober friends, his presence on her final flight has caught widespread attention.
Hayden Panettiere and Brian Hickerson had a notoriously turbulent relationship, including an incident where Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in jail following domestic violence charges. Though they later reconnected as sober friends, his presence on her final flight has caught widespread attention.

This relationship holds considerable weight. Panettiere and Hickerson have experienced a tumultuous relationship since 2018, and in April 2021, he received a 45-day jail sentence after pleading no contest to two felony charges related to harming a spouse or cohabitant, as confirmed by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office to People.

Court documents reveal that Hickerson faced a total of eight charges related to alleged abusive incidents from May 2019 to January 2020, which included four counts of domestic violence and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

He was also sentenced to four years of probation, mandated to attend 52 domestic violence classes, required to pay $500 in restitution, and was subject to a five-year restraining order. At that time, Panettiere had openly discussed the alleged abuse.

She stated, ‘I am coming forward with the truth about what happened to me with the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve. I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again.’

Despite their troubled history, the couple maintained a connection. By March 2026, they were spotted together again, albeit under markedly different circumstances.

Health Struggles She Was Facing

A source close to Panettiere informed TMZ that she had been experiencing back pain for the past year, adding a new layer of understanding to a scene captured just five months before her death.

In March 2026, Panettiere was seen leaving Los Angeles International Airport using crutches, with Hickerson accompanying her while managing her luggage.

Her representative later explained the situation to E! News, noting, ‘Hayden has been privately managing a temporary nerve condition, which is the reason she was seen using crutches. She is recovering well and is on the mend.’

Panettiere herself provided a brief explanation in video footage captured by TMZ as she loaded her bags into a car. She remarked, ‘Just had some pinched nerves in my lower back, but I’m feeling good.’ Sources close to the situation asserted at that time that despite their public appearances together, Panettiere and Hickerson were ‘just friends.’

The star also directly confronted painful public rumors regarding the custody arrangement of her daughter, Kaya. She forcefully shut down claims that she had willingly given away her child to live in Europe with ex Wladimir Klitschko.

Months prior to her passing, Panettiere confronted another painful issue: accusations she had abandoned custody of her daughter, Kaya. During a May 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, she directly countered claims that she had willingly given up her child.

‘The notion that anyone would think I could just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking,’ she expressed. ‘That couldn’t be further from the truth.’

Kaya, her daughter with ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, has lived mainly in Europe since she was about two and a half years old, after Klitschko determined it would be in her best interest. Panettiere revealed that the decision devastated her, stating, ‘I went like a mother lion. I would have burnt the world down for my child.’

She elaborated that by the time she regained the strength to challenge the custody arrangement, Kaya had already developed a life abroad, filled with friends, activities, and proficiency in multiple languages. Removing her from that situation, Panettiere commented, would have been selfish.

‘She in no way feels abandoned — and that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of,’ she stated.

The custody arrangement stemmed from a period in Panettiere’s life that she described as particularly challenging. On the Shetty podcast, she revealed that after Kaya’s birth, she struggled with postpartum depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, ultimately making the decision herself to seek help.

‘The misconception is that I have been forced into treatment; in fact, I sought it out myself,’ she clarified.

She described losing her sense of self while attempting to navigate her depression, indicating that those around her, including Klitschko, did not initially grasp the severity of her situation.

‘I didn’t know what was happening,’ she acknowledged. The ensuing years involved a battle with depression, anxiety, alcohol, and substance issues as she searched for relief.

Panettiere had previously spoken about this difficult time. In an April 2023 interview with The New York Times, she recounted a moment when she no longer recognized herself. ‘My eyes were yellow,’ she reflected, sharing that doctors informed her at 27 that her liver was failing and she was septic.

She departed from the show ‘Nashville’ during its fourth season in 2015 to pursue treatment. In 2021, she entered treatment again for eight months. By the time of that interview with The Times, she reported being sober for nearly two years.

A Family Dealing with Heartbreak

The news of Panettiere’s death comes just over three years after her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 28. At that time, the family confirmed through a statement that a medical examiner determined the cause to be cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, alongside complications with his aortic valve.

Jansen followed his sister into acting as a child, eventually carving out a career as a voice actor, most notably for his role as Shovelmouth in the 2006 film ‘Ice Age: The Meltdown.’

During a September 2024 appearance on Today, Panettiere spoke about the impact of that loss, admitting that she still felt she had not fully processed it. ‘When you lose somebody that you saw in all the important moments in your life, standing right next to you, it just rocks your world,’ she said. ‘I want to leave this world a better place in his name.’
