Rick Springfield, 76, Jokes After Gym Selfie with 99-Year-Old Dick Van Dyke: ‘Thought I Was Doing Well’
|Rick Springfield may be in great shape at 76, but even he admits he was humbled after bumping into Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke during a workout session.
On Friday, Sept. 26, the Jessie’s Girl singer shared an Instagram selfie with Van Dyke, 99, who was still powering through exercises at the gym.
“Filming an episode of Men’s Health and I went to the gym, and who should be there but 99-year-old Dick Van Dyke working out on every machine,” Springfield wrote.
The photo shows Springfield smiling with his fist raised while Van Dyke playfully posed for the camera.
“I Thought I Was Doing Well”
Springfield couldn’t help but poke fun at himself after witnessing Van Dyke’s incredible energy.
“I thought I was doing well at 76,” Springfield quipped. “But Dick got up from the chest press machine and did a little dance step before I left! Amazing!”
Van Dyke, who has lived in Malibu for more than 30 years, will mark his 100th birthday on December 13. Just weeks before, on Nov. 18, he’s set to release a new book: 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life.
Springfield praised his fellow entertainer, calling Van Dyke “an awesome human being” and an inspiration.

While Van Dyke wowed him with his endurance, Springfield has long been committed to staying fit. He previously told PEOPLE that his abs are maintained through consistent exercise and his high-energy concerts.
“I exercise every day, and every time I play with my band, it’s a two-hour aerobic workout,” he said.
When touring, Springfield makes time for the gym. “We’re Planet Fitness whores,” he joked. “Planet Fitness is like the Holiday Inn of workout places — they’re all the same, every place you go.”
A Healthier Lifestyle with Age
Springfield admitted that his focus has shifted over the years.
“The focus of tour used to be partying and getting laid. Now it’s getting enough sleep and finding a nice restaurant,” he said.
He also revealed he’s cut back on alcohol as part of his health-conscious lifestyle.
“I was drinking quite a bit, and as you get older, it’s kind of a natural thing to drop all that. I’m not in AA — but I’ll have a couple of sips of vodka onstage. Otherwise, I don’t drink.”
Despite his age, Springfield says his mindset hasn’t changed much.
“I still feel like I’m in my 20s in my head. Then I see people dying from old age disease and go, ‘Wow, I’m the same age as old people!’”
Two Icons, One Gym Moment
The workout run-in between Rick Springfield and Dick Van Dyke became more than just a funny story — it turned into a viral reminder that age is truly just a number. Both stars prove that with dedication, joy, and movement, staying vibrant well into your later years is possible.
