Liam Neesons Grown-Up Sons – One Changed His Name to Honor Their Late Mom Whom He Thinks of Every Day

After the passing of Liam Neeson’s wife, Natasha Richardson, he took on the responsibility of raising their two children. Although he was initially anxious about being a single parent, Liam managed to navigate this challenge successfully.

The children had to quickly grow up, and despite Liam’s concerns, they turned into adults their parents would be proud of. Following in their parents’ footsteps, Liam and Natasha’s children ventured into the world of acting.

Liam and Natasha’s romance began in 1993 when they starred together in ‘Anna Christie’ on Broadway. At that time, Natasha was already married, but that did not stop the connection that formed between her and Liam.

The ‘Taken’ star remarked on the intense chemistry they experienced, which was unlike anything he had felt before. Their remarkable connection captured the audience’s hearts and even garnered a Tony nomination.

During this time, Natasha’s marriage ended, and though their love blossomed at an inconvenient moment, she found it impossible to resist her feelings for Liam. The actress was unfazed by his reputation as a ladies’ man, stating:

“I’m pleased that women fall in love with him, because I know why.”

On her 30th birthday, while filming ‘Schindler’s List,’ Liam sent Natasha a card. She perceived it as lacking romance and took the opportunity to question the status of their relationship, which led Liam to realize his deep affection for her.

Not long after, they tied the knot on a farm in upstate New York during the summer of 1994. Their lives progressed quickly, welcoming their first son, Micheál, in 1995, followed by their second son, Daniel, just 18 months later.

Natasha Richardson’s Tragic Passing

On March 16, 2009, Natasha opted to take skiing lessons at a resort in Québec, Canada. Around noon, as she was nearing the end of a beginner’s trail with her instructor, she fell.

The fall caused her to hit her head on the snow. Initially, Natasha dismissed the incident, but her instructor, concerned, sought advice from the ski patrol.

The ski patrol called for an ambulance, but Natasha insisted she was fine and declined medical help. She even lightly joked about the situation when she contacted Liam to inform him of the accident.

However, her condition rapidly deteriorated, as she began experiencing a headache and confusion. The resort called for an ambulance a second time, and she was transported to a nearby hospital.

At the hospital, her vital signs improved with the use of oxygen, yet she remained disoriented. Realizing the situation was serious, they transferred her to a trauma center in Montréal.

Upon hearing that his wife was in critical condition, Liam immediately left his set. When he arrived at the hospital, security did not recognize him and initially prevented him from entering.

A compassionate nurse intervened and allowed him to enter through a back door. Once inside, he found Natasha on life support, and the medical staff informed him that she was brain dead. Liam remembered their agreement to disconnect life support if one of them entered a vegetative state.

With this knowledge, Liam spoke to her one last time, expressing his love and explaining that she would not survive the injury. He also mentioned that he would transport her back to New York to allow family and friends to say their goodbyes before making the difficult decision to pull the plug. Natasha left behind two young sons.

Liam expressed his pride in his son’s choice.

Micheál, the Eldest Son of Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson

Years after Natasha’s death, her sons have blossomed into admirable adults. Their eldest, Micheál, was born on June 22, 1995, and followed his parents’ footsteps into acting, making his film debut in 2013 with ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.’

He has appeared in projects like ‘Vox Lux,’ ‘Big Dogs,’ ‘Broken Symphony,’ and ‘Paradise.’ In 2019, Micheál starred alongside his father in ‘Cold Pursuit,’ and the following year, they worked together again in ‘Made in Italy.’

Micheál’s name pays homage to Natasha’s grandfather, Michael Redgrave, who won an Oscar for ‘Mourning Becomes Electra’ in 1947, a film that featured stars like Kirk Douglas and Rosalind Russell.

To honor Liam’s Irish heritage and his role as Irish revolutionary leader Michael Collins in a biopic, they chose the Irish version of the name, pronounced ‘Meehall.’ Liam and Natasha raised their children in New York, where Micheál had to adopt an English accent for one of his films.

Growing up around the entertainment industry, Micheál and his younger brother, Daniel, witnessed their mother perform as Sally Bowles in ‘Cabaret’ and their father in ‘The Crucible.’ In 2018, Micheál changed his last name from Neeson to Richardson to honor his late mother, stating:

“It was mainly like a homage to my mother, a way to carry her with me. Going into this industry, carrying her last name definitely inspires me, and it is also comforting.”

Liam supported his son’s choice and felt proud of it. He also wanted to avoid situations where people might continuously ask his son about their relationship. The actor, who believed his son made the right decision, shared his thoughts:

“It was a lovely gesture. Natasha’s family, including her mother and sisters, were very touched by it. I’m proud of it.”

Micheál’s maternal grandmother, the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, also endorsed his decision, commenting that while customs typically dictate that people take the man’s name, she respected her grandson’s choice and found the name perfectly fitting.

In 2015, Micheál reflected on the solace he found in family and friends following his mother’s demise. He admitted that he strayed off course while in New York, filling the gap left by her death with partying. U2’s lead singer Bono, who experienced a similar loss, shared his story with Micheál, providing him with understanding and insight.

Despite the pain of losing his mother when he was just 13, Micheál found strength in his grandmother Vanessa, who became a nurturing figure and a reliable confidante during those challenging times, always there to listen to his concerns.

Micheál described the sudden nature of his mother’s passing as a storm of emotions. He highlighted the importance of cherishing memories, like her laughter and the moments they shared, to help cope with the tragedy. Over time, he and Daniel learned to remember their mother through the simple things.

Micheál expressed that his mother was wonderful and he wished he could have adult conversations with her. He said: “I was a mama’s boy growing up and she was really my best friend. I mean we were all a close family, but Danny was my dad’s boy, and I was my mom’s boy, for sure.”

In June 2020, Micheál admitted that he still found it challenging to come to terms with his mother’s death, despite being an adult. “I think of her every day… It’s still heartbreaking for me… I don’t think I’ve fully comprehended it yet,” he shared.

Daniel, the Second Son of Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson

The couple’s younger son, Daniel, arrived on August 27, 1996. Unlike his father and brother, he pursued studies in acting and digital media but primarily focused on production roles in filmmaking.

In 2016, Daniel, who never envisioned himself in fashion design, launched an eco-friendly clothing line named ‘Pine Outfitters.’ An enthusiastic athlete, he once aspired to be a hockey player or a producer in the entertainment world, but his clothing line aims to offer stylish apparel.

Daniel appreciates the opportunity to carve out a unique path separate from his family’s legacy. Additionally, in 2016, he initiated a second venture, ‘Willowglen Landscaping,’ and has served as co-founder and president of ‘De-Nada Tequila’ since 2018.

Daniel chose to keep his father’s last name, Neeson. He recalled how his mother, one of his key inspirations, always urged him to pursue what he loved. He stated:

“She was always about ‘don’t ever feel like you have to be forced down a tunnel to fit in. Do what you want to do, but do it to your best and be generous with it.'”

Liam Neeson’s Experience as a Single Parent

As a single parent, Liam worried about his sons, particularly during their teenage years, fearing they might fall into drug use. Despite raising them with solid values, he felt uneasy when they began to experiment.

Liam often wished Natasha were there to share these concerns. He felt grateful that his sons were accustomed to his absences due to work, as one of them was even born while he was on location.

Still, he valued the strong support system that helped him juggle work and parenting. Liam revealed that being a father allowed him to grow as a person, stating:

“They really do help, in all sorts of quiet, subtle ways.”

He occasionally felt powerless in his parenting role. Neeson noted that his sons often returned home later than expected, but he gradually adjusted to that reality.
