Rosie O’Donnell Reveals She Left the US — And Says Life Abroad Has Been ‘Pretty Wonderful’
|Comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell has officially revealed that she’s made a bold and life-changing move — she’s now living full time in Ireland with her 12-year-old child, Dakota, affectionately nicknamed Clay.
In a heartfelt selfie video posted to TikTok on March 11, Rosie shared that she and Clay relocated to Ireland in mid-January and have been adjusting to their new life abroad.
“It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving, so kind, and so welcoming. I’m very grateful,” Rosie said, beaming with appreciation.
Why the Big Move?
Rosie explained that she made the decision to move because she believed it would be the best environment for both herself and her youngest child.
“I’m happy. Clay is happy. I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life back home,” she admitted. “But I’m trying to find a new home in this beautiful country.”
She also shared that she would reconsider returning to the U.S. only when all citizens have equal rights, hinting at her ongoing concern with political and social issues in her homeland.
Becoming an Irish Citizen
O’Donnell is currently working toward obtaining Irish citizenship, citing her family roots — her grandparents were born in Ireland — as the basis for her application.
Her Thoughts on the U.S. Political Climate
Though she didn’t dive into specifics, Rosie expressed deep concern about the political landscape in the U.S., saying:
“It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically, and it’s been hard for me personally. The personal is political — as we all know.”
Finding New Connections
Despite the major change, Rosie shared that she’s already made new friends in Ireland, including a “wonderful man named Tom” who has been showing her around Dublin.
“I’m really grateful,” she said warmly.
Why She Kept It Quiet Until Now
To fans who were wondering about her sudden silence, Rosie explained that she needed time to get settled in her new surroundings with Clay before going public with the news.
“Protect your sanity,” she advised her followers. “Try not to swim in the chaos, even though I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re in the middle of it.”
Just days before the TikTok reveal, Rosie had teased her move on Instagram, posting photos including one of her in a new car she bought to “tool around the countryside on the wrong side of the road.”
