This 84-Year-Old Legend Battles Dementia Beside Her Husband, Who Is Over Two Decades Younger – Their Love Story
Over a year ago, the husband of the veteran actress first made public her battle with dementia. Since then, he has expressed the deep emotional strain of witnessing her gradual decline, describing the experience as ‘painful.’
Scott Brand, who is married to the soap star, has put his career on hold to provide full-time care for her as she navigates the challenges associated with dementia. Recently, he shared a photo of the cherished English actress, which quickly garnered a mix of reactions on social media.

In June 2023, Brand revealed that his wife had been diagnosed with dementia after both had sought answers for her escalating memory issues. The doctors confirmed their fears, indicating there was no chance of recovery.

“My beloved wife and I have had to face this heartbreaking diagnosis,” Brand expressed at that time, noting that she had been struggling with forgetfulness for some time.

“We now understand that there is no possibility of reversing her condition, and it will progressively worsen, perhaps even rapidly,” Brand added.

Brand mentioned that his wife still enjoyed going out and seeing familiar faces. However, because she was often recognized in public, she sometimes experienced confusion, particularly when tired. He hoped that people would be understanding of these moments.

As time went on, the symptoms of her illness became more pronounced. In a March 2024 interview, Brand provided further insight into their everyday life. He revealed that the vibrant woman he once knew was slowly disappearing.

“Everything is gradually fading away, and it’s incredibly painful for me to bear witness to her decline,” he stated. His well-known wife now struggles to recognize individuals and has started calling everyone ‘Scott.’

Her decline has also impacted her appearance. Brand recalled how she used to be very particular about her looks and would never leave home without makeup. Now, her cosmetics remain untouched, and she has lost interest in clothing, especially the leopard print styles she once loved.

Mobility has become a significant issue, and she now requires a wheelchair. Brand reflected on the silent loss of their shared activities, recalling how much she enjoyed planning vacations, romantic dinners, and leisurely walks together.

Those cherished moments have ceased. He no longer travels as he committed to remaining by her side. After taking on the role of her primary caregiver, Brand began to notice the small joys he used to take for granted, like enjoying a drink or watching football with friends.

Now, everything requires careful planning, and he often feels too exhausted to go out. He revealed that he must always be prepared to drive at a moment’s notice in case anything unexpected happens, eliminating the option of drinking alcohol.

These daily adjustments began to affect not only his routine but also his mental health. “For me, the most difficult aspect was accepting and coming to terms with the diagnosis,” Brand shared.

Initially, he resisted seeking outside help, thinking he could manage everything alone, especially since they had always prioritized their privacy. However, he soon realized this wasn’t sustainable. His health started to decline under the pressure of being the sole caregiver, and he felt it was ‘killing’ him.

Furthermore, he had to take on responsibilities that were previously hers. She had always managed their finances meticulously, but now she no longer recognized the worth of money.

Suddenly, he found himself in charge of all household matters, an unfamiliar role for him. Brand advised others in similar predicaments to accept help early on, stating that attempting to navigate alone was not a viable long-term plan.

With the escalating demands of caregiving, Brand found solace in the support provided by the Alzheimer’s Society. He and his wife endorsed a campaign from the organization, which he described as a ‘lifeline’ since receiving the diagnosis.

The advertisement, named ‘The Long Goodbye’ and narrated by actor Colin Firth, depicted the painful, enduring experience of dementia. For Brand, the loss of simple pleasures — such as spontaneous outings, holding hands, dining out, or shopping together — embodied the essence of the campaign’s title.

The charity also matched him with a Dementia Adviser, Julie Mann, who helped lighten his responsibilities. She assisted him with financial matters, long-term planning, and finding appropriate care. He noted that without this assistance, managing everything would have been daunting, labeling the support as critical and ongoing.

While the backing from the Alzheimer’s Society alleviated some pressure, moments of joy became scarce. In March 2025, Brand shared a recent image of his wife, soap actress Julie Goodyear, now 84, along with a brief message in a since-deleted post that read, ‘Just returned home with my lovely wife, and we had a fantastic day together.’
In the shared photo, Goodyear, who was captured for the first time in 2023 during a charity walk since her diagnosis, was seated and dressed in a gray hoodie. Her long silver hair was pulled back from her face, and deep lines graced her features, giving her skin a pale appearance. She smiled, revealing a few missing teeth.
The photo quickly attracted public attention and elicited a wide range of reactions online. While some fans criticized the decision to share the image, others expressed their support.
In a now-deleted post on X, one user wrote, ‘I feel absolutely DISGUSTED that Julie Goodyear’s husband would release that photo of her.’ Another commenter added, ‘So very sad to see this photo; Julie was always so glamorous in Corrie, let’s remember her from those days [sic].’
Conversely, others defended Brand’s choice to post the picture. A now-deleted comment said, ‘Julie Goodyear’s husband did nothing wrong! She looks happy and cared for; what should he do, hide her away because it makes weirdos uncomfortable?’

Some shared personal anecdotes, including one person who said, ‘My mum [sic] had dementia; I think the picture is lovely. She looks happy in her own little world and still has a lovely sparkle about her.’ Another simply remarked, ‘Aww so sad; dementia is cruel [sic].’
Months prior, in June 2024, Brand posted a heartfelt message celebrating their anniversary. He shared a throwback image from their wedding day along with the caption, ’17 years today, my beautiful wife and I tied the knot, and every day is still special.’
Goodyear first met Brand in 1996 when he delivered plaster to a renovation project she was working on. They later married in a private ceremony in 2007, with Brand being over two decades younger than her.

The English actress once noted that they both shared a playful sense of humor and that Brand treated her well. She also mentioned that he often joked about not being able to keep up with her lively nature, admitting that she sometimes wore him out. Before meeting Brand, Goodyear had experienced a tumultuous romantic life.

She had been married three times prior. Her first marriage to Ray Sutcliffe occurred in 1959 when she became pregnant at 17, but the relationship ended in 1963 due to emotional distance. After the birth of their son, Gary Goodyear, Sutcliffe moved to Australia, severing all ties with the family.

Goodyear’s second marriage resulted in even more sorrow. Her marriage to Tony Rudman lasted from 1973 to 1974 and unraveled almost immediately. In her autobiography ‘Just Julie,’ she recounted how Rudman’s demeanor changed right after they wed.

As they left the church, he yanked her arm and pulled her away from the guests, mumbling, ‘Just get in the [expletive] car.’ Once at the reception, Rudman walked off and never returned, leaving Goodyear to face their guests alone. The cause of his sudden shift remained a mystery, but she admitted it cost her greatly — especially financially.

After her second marriage fell apart, Goodyear’s third experience was quite different. In 1985, she married Richard Skrob, a wealthy American widower who had been battling leukemia. Their connection deepened quickly, and when he proposed, she accepted.

However, their marriage took a strange turn from the start. Skrob opted to spend their wedding night sailing instead of being with her, and he also did not return with her to Britain as expected. By 1987, their relationship had deteriorated.

Despite her personal setbacks, Goodyear’s early career also faced challenges. Her initial stint on ‘Coronation Street’ in 1966 lasted just six weeks, leaving her disheartened.

She returned to typing and occasional TV roles, even showing up at Granada in a concrete mixer, leading to a sharp comment from Pat Phoenix. They later became friends, and Goodyear heeded her advice to train at Oldham Rep. Four years later, she returned to the show with a six-month contract, determined to make Bet Lynch a memorable character.

From early heartbreaks to public acclaim and personal trials, Goodyear’s journey has been extraordinary. Throughout it all, she has remained a beloved figure whose influence continues both on and off the screen.
