Willow Smith Breaks Silence: ‘My Success Has Nothing to Do With My Parents

In Hollywood, family names often hold a lot of power. But Willow Smith, daughter of stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, wants to make one thing clear.

She doesn’t want to be called a “nepo baby,” a term used for those who succeed in the entertainment world because of their famous families.

Willow wants people to know the truth. Keep reading to learn more.

Willow Smith grew up in the spotlight as the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. But in 2010, when she was just nine years old, she released her first single, “Whip My Hair.” This showed the world she was more than just a Smith – she was a star on her own.

The song, with its strong message about being yourself and its catchy hook, became a big hit. People of all ages loved it.

It also made Willow – the youngest of the Smith kids – very famous. She toured the world with Justin Bieber after the song’s success.

But all the attention was overwhelming for her as a child.

“There was a time when it was really dark for me. I wanted to escape it in every way possible,” she told *Allure* in May 2024.

In response, Willow shaved her head.

“All the energy your hair holds – your sadness, happiness, and confusion – stays with you. When you shave it off, you’re starting fresh. You feel new,” she explained.

Willow once said she regretted calling her first song an “embarrassment.” But as an adult, she now appreciates the experience. In an interview with *Billboard News,* she shared her thoughts.

“There were fun parts. As a teenager, I felt like, ‘Ugh, trauma! It hurt me, and I didn’t understand!’ Now, I see that while it was hard, my message hasn’t changed.”

She added, “The song is about being yourself, living boldly, and expressing yourself. That’s still what I believe. ‘Whip My Hair’ is the foundation for everything I’ve done since. I’m grateful for it and wouldn’t change a thing.”

Finding her own path
Though her first single was a pop hit, Willow quickly moved away from mainstream pop music. She explored alternative and experimental styles, creating her own unique path.

“I’ve tried to run away from music. I told myself, ‘I’m not a musician. I’ll do something else.’ But it always pulls me back,” said Willow, who also co-wrote the book *Black Shield Maiden,* a fantasy about an African warrior in a Viking world.

“That’s how you know something matters to you. Even if it causes pain or discomfort, you keep going back to it. I trust that feeling and stick with it,” she said.

In May 2024, Willow released her sixth album, *Empathogen,* which mixes jazz, Indian raga, and Gregorian chant.

Proving herself
Even with her famous family, Willow faced the challenge of proving herself in the public eye. She doesn’t accept the label of “nepo baby,” which assumes her success is only because of her parents.

While some embrace the label, Willow disagrees. She’s worked hard to show she’s more than her last name.

“I believe my spirit is strong. Even if my parents weren’t famous, I’d still be a unique, creative thinker,” she told *Allure.* “People think I’m only successful because of my parents. That made me work harder to prove them wrong. But now, I don’t need to prove anything to anyone.”

Willow Smith has shown she’s much more than just the daughter of Will and Jada. Through her music, acting, and activism, she’s built her own successful career.
