Inside James Van Der Beek’s Gorgeous Texas Home: How His Family Supports Him in His Brave Cancer Battle

James Van Der Beek moved his family to a new city during the pandemic, and they are now settled into their Texas home. However, the actor is now facing a serious health challenge.

In November 2024, James revealed that he has cancer. Thankfully, he has the love and support of his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.

James, 47, opened up about his condition, saying, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been dealing with this privately and taking steps to fight it, with the help of my amazing family.” He also shared that he feels good and is optimistic.

Colorectal cancer starts in the rectum or colon, parts of the digestive system. James is currently battling his illness at his family’s home in Texas, where they moved during the pandemic.

In September 2020, James shared photos on Instagram of the house they moved into in Texas. The pictures included his family by a tree, his children in an empty kitchen, and him and Kimberly in front of a fireplace.

He captioned the post, “Sometimes a fuller life begins with an empty house. Leaving Los Angeles grateful for all the friends and memories we’ve made. Onto the next adventure!”

Kimberly later shared a video about the move, explaining that managing the transition with five kids during the pandemic was exhausting. She spoke fondly of Los Angeles but admitted it felt cramped for their family. The backyard was small, and the kids couldn’t enjoy outdoor activities like riding bikes or climbing trees.

The move to Texas provided more space. Their new home is on 36 acres, offering room for the kids to play and explore. Kimberly loved the open land and even convinced James, who initially hesitated, to make the move.

Before moving, Kimberly had dreams about relocating to Texas. She took it as a sign when a friend wore a red cap with “Texas” on it. The family decided to visit the state for their anniversary and fell in love with it.

They’ve since turned their property into a family compound, complete with a barn and guest cabins. Kimberly’s pregnant sister and her husband even moved in with them.

Their outdoor space includes a swimming pool, caretaker quarters, and beautiful views of the Pedernales River. The family also enjoys nature walks, bike rides, and playing with their dogs. Kimberly has embraced country life by gardening and raising chickens.

The house has a spacious living room, five bedrooms, and a lot of wooden accents. James and Kimberly often share glimpses of their home on social media. For example, in 2023, Kimberly posted pictures of their bathroom and mudroom after some renovations.

The home has plenty of cozy areas for the family, including a kitchen where James is often seen cooking while holding one of their toddlers. Kimberly described their Texas lifestyle as more affordable than their previous life in Beverly Hills, despite the house being bigger and more spacious.
