My Wife Said Our Son Was Buried—What I Discovered the Next Day Shocked Me
|Greg thought he and Natalie had managed to co-parent well—until one late-night phone call changed everything with news he never expected.
Five years. That’s how long Natalie and I were together before we decided to end things. I think deep down we both knew it was inevitable, even if we never really talked about it. We met when we were young—maybe too young.
We had our son, Jake, when we were just figuring out life ourselves. Being parents was amazing, but it was also hard. We had so much to learn, and sometimes, we clashed over what was best for Jake. But after the breakup, we agreed on one thing: Jake needed both of us. So, we worked out a co-parenting plan that seemed to be going well.
At least, I thought it was.
It wasn’t easy, of course. There were arguments here and there—disagreements over little things, like how to discipline Jake or what kind of snacks he should have. But for the most part, we kept it civil. We both loved Jake and wanted to do what was best for him, or so I thought.
Then, last Tuesday night, I got a phone call that changed everything.
I was in bed, half asleep, when my phone rang. It was Natalie. We don’t usually call each other unless it’s an emergency, so my heart immediately started racing. I picked up the phone, expecting to hear something about Jake being sick or needing help.
Instead, Natalie’s voice was calm, too calm. “Greg, we need to talk.”
I sat up in bed, feeling a knot form in my stomach. “What’s going on? Is Jake okay?”
There was a long pause before she finally spoke. “Jake’s not with us anymore.”
For a moment, I didn’t understand what she was saying. “What do you mean, he’s not with us? Where is he?”
Her voice was cold, distant. “He’s been buried.”
I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me. I couldn’t breathe. Buried? My son? The words didn’t make sense. “What are you talking about? Where is Jake?”
Another pause. Then she said something that made my blood run cold. “Greg, I didn’t want to do this, but… you don’t deserve to know. You haven’t been a good father.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My mind was spinning. Was this some sort of twisted joke? I demanded answers, but Natalie just hung up the phone. I tried calling back, but she wouldn’t pick up.
I didn’t sleep at all that night. I was shaking, terrified, and confused. What did she mean by ‘buried’? Where was my son?
The next morning, I went straight to her house. I pounded on the door until she finally opened it, looking tired and irritated. “What are you doing here, Greg?”
“Where’s Jake?” I demanded, my voice shaking with anger.
She sighed, crossing her arms. “Greg, Jake’s not here. He’s gone.”
I felt my heart stop. “Gone? What do you mean, ‘gone’? You said he was buried!”
Natalie just shook her head, but then she dropped the bombshell. “Greg, Jake is alive, but… I sent him away.”
I stood there, stunned, unable to process what she was saying. Sent him away? To where? Why? My head was spinning with a thousand questions.
It turned out that Natalie had taken Jake and sent him to stay with her parents in another state—without telling me. She was angry, claiming I wasn’t a responsible father, and she wanted more control over Jake’s life. She had been planning this for weeks, maybe even months, but hadn’t said a word to me about it.
I felt like my whole world had been turned upside down. My son, my little boy, was suddenly hundreds of miles away, and I hadn’t even known. The worst part was that Natalie had done this out of spite, not because Jake was in any danger or because I was a bad father. She just wanted to hurt me.
I immediately contacted a lawyer to fight for my parental rights. I didn’t want to take Jake away from his mother, but I also wasn’t going to let her make decisions like this behind my back. Co-parenting was supposed to be about working together, not keeping secrets or playing games with our son’s life.
Now, I’m in the middle of a legal battle to bring Jake back home, and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I never thought Natalie would do something like this. I thought we had figured out how to make it work for Jake’s sake, but I was wrong.
The trust between us is gone. Now, everything is different.
All I can do is keep fighting for my son and hope that one day, we’ll get back to some kind of normal. But after that phone call, I don’t know if anything will ever be the same again.
