Shakira thought that she and her ex, Gerard Piqué, would be together and happy for life before the world began buzzing with rumors of infidelity.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer, who announced her split from the footballer in June 2022, was candid about the breakdown of their 11-year relationship during an interview with Billboard published on Thursday.

“My priority was home, my family. I believed in ’till death do us part.’ I believed in that dream, and I had that dream for myself, for my kids,” she told the agency.

Shakira and Piqué have two sons, Milan (10) and Sasha (8). The Colombian hitmaker added that she hopes to have a lasting love like her parents, who have been together for 50 years.

“They love each other as if it were the first day, with a love that is unique and irreplaceable. So I know it’s possible. And that has always been my example. That’s what I wanted for myself and my kids, but it didn’t happen.”

Reflecting on her past romance with Piqué, the 46-year-old singer admitted that she had to put her music career on hold while living with the former professional athlete in Spain.

“The thing is, I was dedicated to him. To family, to him. It was very hard for me to pursue my professional career while I was in Barcelona,” she said.

“I couldn’t leave my kids and go somewhere to make music outside my home. It was hard to keep up the rhythm,” Shakira added.

But since returning to Miami in May, the singer has been in the studio, recording new music, and plans to go on tour in 2024.

Children struggled with media attention

As for her two children, the Grammy winner revealed that they have thrived away from the spotlight after a recent move to the U.S.

“The media situation was tough for them in Barcelona. We had paparazzi at the door every day. Here, they’re like all normal kids who enjoy normalcy, which is what school should be: a safe haven where they can be themselves.”

Shakira and Piqué (36) confirmed their split in a joint statement last year. Page Six later reported that the music superstar was “destroyed” by the footballer’s alleged infidelity with his now-girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí. Shakira reportedly discovered her ex’s affair when she realized her jam was missing from their fridge.

Single Shakira has since sparked rumors of dating other famous athletes amid Piqué’s new relationship with 24-year-old model. In July, she was spotted enjoying a dinner date with Miami Heat player Jimmy Butler in London. The singer was previously linked to Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton after they were seen spending time together in Miami and Barcelona.
