Keith Urban, who is now 54 years old, had a challenging upbringing with an alcoholic father. This environment made him more vulnerable to struggling with alcohol himself.

Reflecting on his past, he shared with the Sunday Times, “My dad was an alcoholic, so I grew up in an alcoholic house and it took me a long time to believe I was wired the same.”

In 1998, the renowned country musician sought help by entering rehab for the first time. However, the battle with alcohol continued, leading him back to rehab less than a decade later in 2006.

Urban candidly admitted, “Everyone does what they want to do to have a great time. I just realized I’m allergic to it. Someone said, ‘You have an allergy? What happens when you drink?’ And I said, ‘I break out in cuffs.’”

Although Kidman and Urban had only known each other for a year and were still in the early stages of their marriage, Kidman stood by Urban’s side and supported him in his journey to recovery.

Urban expressed his gratitude, saying, “I was incredibly fortunate to have Nic stage an intervention for me.” He went on to acknowledge that his actions could have jeopardized the young marriage, potentially leading to its collapse.

When Urban was struggling, Kidman was away working on a film. She rushed back, gathered their friends, and organized an intervention.

Urban deeply appreciates this act of love, stating, “In many ways, it was the most powerful act of love to step into the fire and pull me out, because she believed in me, and she saw something in me in such a way that she risked everything, everything, to trust me and pull me out of the fire and allow me then to do the right thing and come out into the light.”

In October 2006, he sought treatment at the Betty Ford Center in California. By January 2007, he proudly announced he had successfully completed his rehabilitation.

To express his gratitude to Kidman, he penned the ballad “Thank You.”

Looking back on his journey, in 2018, Urban admitted he wished he had gotten sober sooner, but acknowledged, “it is what it is.”

He realized he wasn’t living up to his full potential and felt trapped in a very confined life.

Their enduring commitment to each other, no matter the challenges, is truly admirable. They never give up on one another.
