The Miss Universe contest has been going on for 71 years. But this year was different. For the first time ever, there was a plus-sized contestant. A 22-year-old girl from Nepal was the first to break the usual mold of contestants!

Some people loved that she was different, but others criticized her appearance. Jane Dipika Garrett, the contestant from Nepal, was honest about how it felt. She always wanted to be a model but struggled with feeling good about herself. Being in the competition helped her gain more confidence.

She shared that she didn’t expect to get so much applause when she was on stage. The young woman from Nepal joined the competition not expecting anything for herself but wanted to represent her country and women all around the world.

Even though she got attention worldwide, she also got some unkind messages. Some people said really mean things like calling her a “whale” or telling her to go to the gym. It hurt her because they didn’t know her story or what she’s been through.

She told everyone that she has a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This means her ovaries make too many androgens, which are hormones. People with PCOS might have more androgens than usual. PCOS shows up differently in each person – some gain weight, some have irregular periods, acne, or more hair.

Because of PCOS, she gained some weight recently. She said it made her feel not good enough or beautiful. It also affected her mental health and self-esteem.

Even though she faced challenges, she didn’t let anything stop her from doing her best in the Miss Universe pageant. She worked really hard to try and win the title.

Some people are always negative and may say mean things about how someone looks. But we should ignore them! Miss Nepal is beautiful both on the outside and inside.
