US Olympic Champion in Critical Condition: Battling for Her Life in ICU

Disturbing reports have emerged regarding Mary Lou Retton, the revered former Olympic gymnast, who is currently in intensive care, battling a rare form of pneumonia. The distressing news was disclosed by Retton’s family late last night, emphasizing that she is currently unable to breathe without assistance.

Renowned for clinching the individual all-around gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Retton holds a place of honor as one of the most iconic American athletes in gymnastics history. Her historic victory marked the first time an American woman had ever secured the gymnastics all-around gold medal, let alone any individual medal.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Retton’s fame extended nationwide, leading her to venture into movies and TV shows during the 1980s and 1990s. In 1984, she received Sports Illustrated’s prestigious Sportsperson of the Year accolade.

However, supporters of the former star have been deeply shaken by an update from her daughter, McKenna Kelley, who revealed that her mother is presently in the intensive care unit (ICU), grappling with this uncommon form of pneumonia.

In her post on Spotfund, McKenna stated: “Hey everyone! On behalf of my sisters and I, we need y’all’s help. My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she is not insured. We ask that if you could help in any way, that 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill. ANYTHING, absolutely anything, would be so helpful for my family and my mom. Thank y’all so very much!”

After retiring from gymnastics, Retton transitioned into motivational speaking. Additionally, she served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under former President George W. Bush.
